Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Ophthalmology theatres. We are looking to recruit 3 Band 3 Senior Theatre Support Workers to join our friendly team, based on the Royal Liverpool Hospital site. The successful candidate will assist the theatre team in the planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care. You will assist in the smooth running of theatre lists, sending patients as required and escorting patients to theatre and post‑op to the Theatre Admissions Unit with appropriate handovers, monitoring patients’ condition and seeking advice where there is cause for concern. In 2025 we are welcoming the introduction of a dedicated Cataract Treatment Centre in which the role of the Senior Theatre Support worker will be essential. This is a very exciting project for Ophthalmology. A reputation for providing a high standard of care is essential for this post.
Main Duties
* Assist in the delivery of high‑quality care.
* Assist in the delivery of safe standards of practice.
* Assist the theatre team in meeting service and performance targets and the effective use of theatre resources.
* Internal rotation is in practice through theatres, anaesthetic, scrub and recovery to allow personal development and the smooth delivery of service. Formal appraisal may be agreed annually to concentrate on certain aspects of the job.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
* Assist the theatre team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
* After competency assessment, undertake appropriate clinical procedures in all areas of care delivery.
* Undertake pre‑operative catheterisation of female patients.
* Act as scrub person for minor surgery, endoscopic procedures and some arthroscopic procedures.
* Take responsibility for ordering and maintenance of stock levels, of specialist items and resources in the unit.
* Assist in the smooth running of theatre lists by sending patients as required and escorting patients from theatre to recovery area with the appropriate handover.
* Undertake the checking‑in procedure when receiving patients from the ward into the Anaesthetic Room.
* Participate in peri‑operative care team.
* Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of the clinical environment and theatre equipment.
* Organise the required equipment and medical staff needed for the list.
* Take responsibility for the decontamination and disinfection of scopes and specialist probes.
* Undertake clinical procedures including bronchoscopy, flexible cystoscopes, TRUBS and ECT.
* Monitor patients’ condition and take appropriate action if there is any cause for concern.
* Discharge patients to the ward or Recovery Area.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* NVQ3/equivalent experience in care/care related subject.
* Level 3/equivalent experience in direct care.
Knowledge
* Awareness of Essence of Care benchmarking.
Other

Skills
* Excellent communication skills.
* Basic IT skills (desirable).
