Drive ecommerce growth and lead a major platform transition at a leading outdoor publisher. 12-month contract.
An exciting opportunity to join our team and make a real impact. We’re looking for a highly motivated ecommerce and digital marketing manager to lead a major transition from our current website to Shopify, drive growth in direct-to-consumer sales, and help promote our brand new app. You’ll bring hands‑on Shopify experience, a strong grasp of digital marketing channels, and a data‑driven approach to growing an online audience. If you’re energised by ecommerce and the chance to leave your mark over the course of a year, we’d love to hear from you.
Cicerone
Cicerone Press is a leading publisher of trusted guides for walkers, trekkers, mountaineers and cyclists. Our 415+ guides span the UK, Europe and much of the world, and are sold globally in specialist and general outlets, as well as online and through our app. Our friendly team is based in Kendal on the edge of the Lake District, working closely with our authors, copyeditors, printers, distributors, retailers, media and many others in the outdoor community.
We believe in providing the best possible guides and service to our customers and looking after our authors and suppliers. We are a supportive and friendly team, where your ideas can flourish.
This is an exciting time to join the team, as we look ahead to optimising our digital marketing, listening to our customers, and promoting our brand new app.
The role
You’ll be joining a marketing team of three and working closely with colleagues across sales, technology and publishing. The role has two main dimensions: leading a significant website platform migration from Craft to Shopify, and managing and growing Cicerone’s direct‑to‑consumer ecommerce channel across digital marketing, email and paid channels. You’ll report to the Operations Director and Technology Director, and have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution in a short space of time.
What the role is accountable for
Shopify platform transition
* Leading the transition of the Cicerone website from Craft CMS to Shopify
* Working closely with our Technology Director, the marketing team and potentially external developers to specify, manage and deliver the migration
* Ensuring continuity of ecommerce operations throughout the transition
* Setting up and optimising Shopify for Cicerone’s specific requirements
Ecommerce management and growth
* Managing the day‑to‑day performance of the Cicerone website and online shop
* Identifying and implementing improvements to conversion rate, average order value and customer retention
* Monitoring and reporting on ecommerce performance using analytics tools
* Developing and executing a plan to grow direct‑to‑consumer sales over the year
Digital marketing
* Working with the marketing team to plan and deliver digital marketing campaigns across relevant channels to drive traffic and sales
* Potentially managing paid search and shopping campaigns across Google Ads and Meta, ensuring campaigns are profitable and continuously improved
* Overseeing SEO activity and coordinating with the wider team on content and on‑site optimisation
* Sending and optimising regular consumer newsletters and promotional emails
* Implementing automated email flows to support customer acquisition, onboarding and retention
* Growing the email subscriber base and improving engagement metrics
Working across the team
* Collaborating with sales, technology and publishing colleagues on campaigns, launches and promotions
* Supporting new title launches with coordinated digital and ecommerce activity
* Contributing to broader marketing planning and reporting
Your experience and skills
You will be a results-driven digital marketer with substantial, hands‑on Shopify experience. This is a firm requirement for the role: we need someone who can hit the ground running, fill our internal Shopify knowledge gaps and confidently lead a build from scratch. We’re looking for solid experience in:
* Shopify — a minimum of 2 years hands‑on experience, including implementing Shopify stores from scratch. Please note that experience with other platforms alone is not considered equivalent for this role
* Digital marketing across multiple channels (SEO, paid search, email)
* Running and optimising paid search campaigns — Google Ads and/or Meta Ads experience is a plus, though not essential
* Email marketing — experience with Klaviyo is a plus, though not essential
* Using analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics / GA4) to monitor performance and inform decisions
* A strong appreciation of data — comfortable working with reporting dashboards, interpreting trends and using insights to shape marketing decisions
* Managing or contributing to website platform migrations or major development projects
* Experience in book publishing, media or a related industry
* Knowledge of or passion for outdoor activities such as trekking, cycling or hillwalking
* Familiarity with CRM systems and customer segmentation
* Experience managing a small marketing team
* Working with company leadership to contribute to or set marketing strategy
* Experience planning and delivering marketing activity for new digital products — for example, a mobile app launch or similar
Your personal attributes
* Highly motivated and proactive — someone who gets things done and looks for opportunities to improve
* Confident managing a complex, high‑priority project alongside day‑to‑day marketing responsibilities
* Self‑managing, with excellent organisation and the ability to prioritise effectively
* A collaborative team player, able to work well across a small team and with colleagues in other departments
* Data‑driven and analytical — confident interpreting performance data, presenting insights clearly and using them to make better decisions
* Fit with our core values: caring, trusting, improving, adventuring
* A keen interest in the outdoors
