Volunteer with Making it Out to support participants with their wider needs, helping them move towards greater independence.
What difference will you make?
Volunteers will have two direct impacts at MIO. The most tangible benefit will be to the lives of participants, where even small improvements can significantly impact their conditions. This could include helping them access funding or providing peace of mind knowing their problems are being addressed. The second benefit is to the organization, increasing capacity and allowing staff to dedicate more time to funding applications, service delivery, and growth.
What are we looking for?
This role requires at least three years of experience supporting adults with vulnerabilities, such as in social work, counselling, or teaching. This experience is essential due to the complex issues faced by participants and the need for understanding how to navigate these issues. Many support needs are described as 'life admin', which can be complicated by participants' histories and current situations. Advocating for participants and supporting them during conversations can be very helpful. Experience working with probation, prisons, homelessness, or addiction services is valuable. A non-judgemental approach, sense of humour, good listening skills, and a genuine desire to support are essential qualities.
What will you be doing?
Alongside practical and artistic projects, we support participants in navigating complex situations, including providing advice on accessing benefits, housing, employment, and education. As part of our growth, we seek individuals for a part-time pastoral support role. The main base is on Church Road, Portslade, BN41 1LB. The role is flexible, approximately one day a week, with shorter sessions possible. Responsibilities include:
* Advocating for participants on issues like benefits, housing, and immigration.
* Applying for grants and referrals to food banks.
* Liaising with debt agencies and utility companies.
This list is not exhaustive but covers common issues.
