Role Overview
The Web Developer will design, build, and maintain WordPress‑based websites and digital tools, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and UK government service principles. The role requires strong technical expertise, collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, and a commitment to user‑focused design.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead design, development, and maintenance of WordPress websites and digital tools
* Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and government service principles
* Develop responsive front‑end interfaces and custom WordPress themes (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GOV.UK Design System)
* Support secure and scalable back‑end development using PHP (custom templates, blocks, plugins)
* Collaborate across teams to deliver cohesive digital experiences
* Implement version control and CI/CD workflows (GitHub)
* Conduct usability testing, QA, and resolve bugs/performance issues
* Manage hosting environments, DNS, SSL, and cloud deployment (e.g. WP Engine)
* Integrate analytics tools (Google Analytics) for data‑driven improvements
* Stay updated on emerging technologies and contribute to innovation
* Apply Agile methodologies to deliver projects at pace
Required Skills and Experience
* Strong front‑end development skills (HTML, CSS/Sass, JavaScript, JQuery)
* Full‑stack experience in responsive, accessible website development
* Proven ability to develop custom WordPress themes, templates, and blocks
* Experience with CMS platforms and PHP‑based back‑end development
* Familiarity with WordPress plugins (e.g. ACF Pro)
* Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills
* Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
Desirable
* Experience with design tools (e.g. Figma)
* UI/UX design and user research skills
* Understanding of SEO principles
* Experience in government/public‑sector digital services
* Familiarity with Agile project delivery
