We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Geriatrician to join our expanding and dynamic department.
This post has been developed to strengthen and support the Care of the Elderly wards within the Jubilee Wing, as well as to enhance and further develop our Acute Frailty service. The successful applicant will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to older adults across both inpatient and acute care settings.
The role comprises 6 programmed activities (PAs) per week, with an additional 0.66 PAs available for specialty weekend work.
The appointee will join a well-established and collaborative team of Consultant Geriatricians, contributing to a comprehensive Care of the Elderly service. The department has a wide range of specialist interests, including:

This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive team committed to innovation, service development, and delivering outstanding care for older people.
Main duties of the job

Job plans are reviewed annually and SPA may be adjusted to reflect teaching, research and managerial roles.
This role has a dual focus on inpatient care within Care of the Elderly wards and development of the Acute Frailty service. The appointee will work closely with the multidisciplinary team, supervise resident doctors and maintain high standards of care.
Within Acute Frailty (Emergency Department), the postholder will help lead a multidisciplinary team and support service development through quality improvement and data-driven evaluation, working with community teams, the virtual ward, EAU and SDEC.
There are opportunities to support and develop within Orthogeriatrics as part of succession planning, with an emphasis on long-term career development within the Trust.
A 1:8 weekend rota supports the Frailty Virtual Ward, Acute Frailty service and Jubilee Wing wards, attracting 0.66 additional PAs. Participation is expected, although there is no requirement to join the acute medicine rota (optional).
Out-of-hours care is supported by resident doctors with senior supervision. Acute stroke care is managed in Newcastle, with rehabilitation in Gateshead, and a 24/7 GI bleed service is provided by gastroenterology.
