The post holder will work effectively as part of a team providing histopathology, cytopathology, and autopsy clinical technical services to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and local Primary Care Trusts.
They will perform a variety of technical, clerical, and administrative duties that facilitate the processing of patient samples for analysis, primarily to assist in the differential diagnosis of cancer-related diseases.
The work involves handling biological samples and associated paperwork, so departmental health and safety policies must be adhered to at all times.
They will support biomedical scientists and pathologists in providing an efficient diagnostic service. Much of this role involves in-depth use of IT software, so the applicant should be very familiar and comfortable with computer use.

The main duties are divided into two areas: Specimen Reception, where the post-holder will receive and book-in human tissue samples (biopsies, organs, fluids) and assist laboratory scientists in preparing samples for automated processing; and the Main Lab, where, depending on experience and qualification, the post-holder will embed tissues into wax blocks, sort blocks and paperwork, maintain laboratory equipment, collate microscope slides for quality control, and operate digital pathology slide scanners.
Additional duties include general filing and stock receipt.
The Cellular Pathology laboratory is based at North Tyneside General Hospital, serving Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and other hospitals in the area. The department serves a population of approximately 550,000 and employs a modern laboratory workflow to ensure excellent results for patients.
