We are now looking for a picture editor to oversee the picture editing of the Filter – the Guardian’s independent product reviews and recommendations section, which offers our readers trustworthy buying advice and sustainable shopping ideas. This is a 12‑month fixed‑term contract or staff secondment.
Responsibilities
* Work to tight deadlines to generate creative, engaging and appropriate images for the Filter.
* Help shape the Filter’s visual identity in the strongest, most imaginative ways, across different platforms.
* Research, resize, upload and caption product photos; liaise with PR contacts.
* Create cut‑outs and composite images for Filter articles, using Photoshop.
* Commission original photography and video for products and features.
* Brief and coach writers on photographing and videoing the products they’re testing.
* Create loops from video created by writers and photographers to embed within articles.
* Provide social media assets.
* Clear copyright and credits.
About You
* Proven experience in picture editing, ideally within the national media online.
* A desire to bring ambitious, creative thinking to how we present our journalism on the Filter, from illustrations to shoots to stop‑motion graphics; video; and social media content.
* Thorough understanding of copyright and image licensing.
* Confidence using Photoshop and Canva to edit images and video.
* Knowledge of video editing software.
* Knowledge of Figma for social media content.
* Sound knowledge of picture agencies and libraries and online archives.
* Experience of commissioning photographs.
* Experience of handling budgets and fee negotiation.
* Demonstrable interest in photography and design.
* A good network of contacts.
* Ideally, you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.
