Job overview

This post offers an exciting opportunity to join the Ophthalmology team at the Sussex Eye Hospital under the supervision of Mr Mayank A. Nanavaty, Consultant (Cornea & Anterior segment). Mr Nanavaty carries out complex cataract, corneal and specialist anterior segment surgeries.

The Sussex Eye Hospital is a tertiary referral University teaching hospital, which receives acute and chronic anterior segment and complex cataract surgery referrals from a wide geographic area.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

·Assisting in all aspects of theatre, inpatient and outpatient care.

·Pre- and post-operative patient care.

·Research and clinical improvement projects: the fellowship has a strong research focus, and the post-holder is expected to take an active role in ongoing and new research studies and clinical improvement projects.

·Teaching of medical students during their ophthalmology rotation.

On Call Commitment: 1:8 Registrar on-call duties (non-resident).

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post offers an exciting opportunity to join the Ophthalmology team at the Sussex Eye Hospital under the supervision of Prof. Mayank A. Nanavaty, Consultant (Cornea & Anterior segment) and Ms. Ritika Mukhija. Both of them carry out complex cataract, corneal and specialist anterior segment surgeries.

The Sussex Eye Hospital is a tertiary referral University teaching hospital, which receives acute and chronic anterior segment and complex cataract surgery referrals from a wide geographic area.

The successful applicant will gain experience in lamellar corneal transplantation (DMEK, DSAEK and DALK), penetrating keratoplasty, routine and complex cataract surgery, ocular surface surgeries including pterygium surgery, stem cell transplants, and medical and surgical management of external eye diseases.

The Fellow will be expected to engage in research and development. There will be opportunity to build up their academic CV if the fellow has an academic appetite.

The Fellow is expected to help with administration and teaching, with regard to all aspects of the corneal service. This includes reviews of corneal inpatients, scheduling of waiting lists, co-ordinating follow up, maintaining and updating the database, assists in running of the Research Office, etc. The fellow will also be on the general on call rota, and will support sessions in eye casualty where we manage a lot of corneal pathology.

Teaching and experience gained from this post would potentially be recognised for CESR, subject to confirmation from the General Medical Council. This job can give enough experience to step into an independent consultant job in future.

The Sussex Eye Hospital is a regional teaching hospital and part of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust and has a complement of 14 Consultant Ophthalmologists. It has bases on both the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Princess Royal Hospital and Lewes Victoria Hospital sites.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Basic medical degree
2. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
3. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

4. Appropriate Royal College Membership

Clinical Skills

10. Minimum of four years’ experience in Ophthalmology
11. Experience in Cataract Surgery

14. Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
