Overview
The Forensic Medical Advice Team (FMAT) specialise in providing advice and support on forensic medical issues within major crime investigations, particularly for largescale healthcare inquiries and child death investigations. They are a national gateway for independent medical experts who can provide advisory or evidential opinions for criminal courts, family courts, and coronial proceedings. They also manage the National Injuries Database (NID) and the Op Marshall dataset for intrafamilial child death investigations.
The role involves direct line management of FMAT Case Support Officers and/or FMAT Research Assistants. The FMAT Adviser will provide support and advice to law enforcement partners across the UK and internationally. This will involve facilitating medical expert opinions for complex major crime cases and extracting evidence-based reference cases from relevant databases to assist investigators and medical experts with decision-making and opinion.
Responsibilities
* Provide operational support and advice on forensic medical areas for major crime investigations and respond to operational referrals.
* Facilitate sourcing and instruction of medical and forensic experts for evidential opinions for court; source and instruct experts to support Officers.
* Advise and promote good practice in imaging of injuries and provide support in the use of imagery to aid expert opinion.
* Support the development and quality assurance of all cases entered onto the National Injuries Database (NID) and the Op Marshall Dataset (intrafamilial child death).
* Interrogate and extract evidence-based reference cases from the NID and Op Marshall Dataset to assist investigators and medical experts with decision-making and opinion; follow established processes to support investigations.
* Present the FMAT services to law enforcement and forensic practitioners across the UK; attend CPD events and deliver presentations in support of operational objectives.
* Manage sensitive data in accordance with relevant legislation (CPIA, DPA) and understand how to deal with and manage sensitive material in line with CPIA and the Data Protection Act.
* Facilitate the instruction of experts to support officers as required.
Qualifications and Experience
* Scientific degree in forensic science or biomedical science or relevant major crime investigative experience.
* Experience of working in a major crime investigation where you utilised medical and forensic experts; understanding of forensic medical and forensic science processes and techniques.
* Experience of post-mortem examinations and exposure to pathology images.
* Practical knowledge of the application of forensic specialists in the investigation of major crime.
* Experience of using databases, interrogating data, conducting analysis and research.
* Proven experience of managing and working to tight deadlines; ability to deliver at pace under pressure.
Leadership and Skills
* Experience in supervising and developing staff; ability to manage a small team of case support officers and student placement officers.
* Effective decision making, communication, and influencing skills; ability to adapt language to meet customer needs.
* Leadership experience in delivering against operational objectives and improving team culture with measurable success.

* Salary: £45,326, with Civil Service Pension scheme contributions (£13,130).
