English Tutor
Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
This role requires an experienced English tutor to deliver high-quality tuition to learners of varying ages and abilities within Greater London. The successful candidate provides engaging, tailored lessons that improve language skills, including reading, writing, speaking and comprehension. The position is temporary and part-time, offering flexible hours to meet learner needs. The tutor supports educational development through clear, structured teaching plans and ongoing assessment of learner progress.
Primary Job Duties
* Plan and deliver effective English lessons that meet individual learner requirements and curriculum standards.
* Assess learners’ language proficiency and identify areas for improvement.
* Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
* Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to learners to enhance confidence and progress.
* Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson plans and learner progress.
* Communicate clearly with learners regarding expectations, goals and performance.
* Prepare learners for examinations or assessments where applicable.
* Stay informed of current developments in English language teaching and apply best practises.
Required Qualifications
* A recognised qualification in English language or education, such as a degree in English, Education, or a related subject.
* Formal teaching qualification, for example a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent certification in English language teaching.
Education
* Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in English, Education, Linguistics, or a closely related discipline.
Experience
* Proven experience of delivering English tuition or teaching in an educational setting.
* Experience working with learners of different age groups and abilities.
* Familiarity with exam preparation and assessment procedures is advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills
* Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage and motivate learners.
* Ability to create inclusive and supportive learning environments.
* Proficiency in lesson planning and adapting materials to meet diverse needs.
* Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
* Basic digital literacy to utilise educational technology and resources effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with teaching English as a second or additional language.
* Knowledge of contemporary teaching methodologies and curriculum frameworks.
* Additional qualifications in special educational needs or literacy support.
Working Conditions
* The role is based within Greater London and may require travel between different locations.
* Part-time hours offer flexibility but may include evenings or weekends depending on learner availability.
* The tutor works independently and manages their own schedule within agreed parameters.
* Temporary contract with the possibility of extension depending on demand and performance.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
