Job Title: Senior Technical Assistant
This is a multidisciplinary role involving:
* Carrying out the processing and correct disposal of laboratory waste on site as per local guidelines.
* Assisting in the provision of media services to meet the institute's needs, primarily for prokaryotic media, but also other media and buffers.
* Assisting in the processing and sterilization of laboratory glassware.
You will be responsible for:
* Conducting routine procedures with standard protocols to ensure the collection and processing of biological and chemical waste, along with providing media/reagent services to the campus.
* Collaborating with the Senior Technical Assistant (Media) to produce sterile media for the institute.
* Planning and organizing your daily activities in coordination with the Principal Technician to meet service levels.
* Arranging and assisting in the collection of waste laboratory chemicals in accordance with service levels.
* Maintaining waste records to comply with regulations and local procedures.
* Supervising and training technical assistants in routine procedures as needed.
* Supporting the Principal Technician to ensure all team services (media, liquid nitrogen delivery, etc.) are maintained at acceptable levels, providing cover when necessary.
* Working within a team to ensure consistent service levels across all core support services, with the ability to work independently.
* Operating glasswashers, autoclaves, and other equipment according to local procedures, and performing basic maintenance tasks.
* Maintaining a good working knowledge of waste and other relevant regulations to ensure safety.

We seek a motivated individual eager to support a busy and varied Science Support Services Technician role. The candidate should be comfortable supporting multiple buildings across a campus, working well both within a team and independently, with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage their own time effectively.
Experience in media production, good communication skills, organizational abilities, and a flexible, learning-oriented approach are essential.
About Us:
The Technical Science Support Team provides practical support for research and administrative teams at the Wellcome Genome Campus. Our small team handles laboratory waste collection and sterilization, media and aqueous consumables preparation, laundering lab coats, and maintaining cryogenic storage vessels, among other duties.
Minimum requirements include:
* Previous laboratory experience in a relevant field
* Basic literacy and numeracy
* Flexibility and willingness to learn
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Organizational skills to manage workload effectively
