Senior Radiographer

At Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust we are looking for Band 6 Radiographers with a passion for X‑ray to join our team.
Location: Primarily at Queen Alexandra Hospital with rotation to community hospital sites including Gosport, Fareham and Petersfield. Opportunities for full or part‑time working. Required to work out of hours, including nights, weekends, late and early shifts, bank holidays (including Christmas and New Year) on rotation.
This is an exciting opportunity for experienced radiographers to join our dynamic and friendly X‑ray team. You will need drive and enthusiasm to develop your clinical and supervisory skills, and a desire to deliver excellent care to our patients. A minimum of 18 months NHS experience is strongly desirable. Development as a new Band 6 radiographer will be supported via our Preceptorship Programme.
Main duties of the job
* Manage and be responsible for staff and resources within a designated clinical area, supervising radiographers, students, apprentices, RDAs and APs up to a maximum of 25.
* Conduct examinations across a range of clinical specialities on a range of patient types, both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi‑professional team, meeting professional, departmental and legal standards.
* Use discretion to work outside departmental standards when necessary, including undertaking additional or specialist techniques and authorising others.
* Ensure clinical practice is carried out correctly, professionally and within the legal framework.
* Support the service to function within budget.
* Contribute to education, training, audit and service improvement, supporting a culture of continuous learning and evidence‑based practice.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical
* Conduct and complete examinations across a range of general radiography on a variety of patient types as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi‑professional team, ensuring professional, departmental and legal standards.
* Interpret clinician requirements, determine appropriate radiographic technique and ensure compliance with best practice to produce diagnostic images.
* Work with discretion to undertake additional or specialist techniques when clinical circumstances require.
* Independently assess each patient and adapt radiographic technique accordingly.
* Check finished radiographs against diagnostic standards, including patient details, and act appropriately.
* Offer a verbal opinion of images and provide advice to other practitioners and clinicians if requested.
* Use the departmental radiology information computer system to register patients and check results and appointments.
* Use CR, DR and PACS to a standard that allows advanced use and basic troubleshooting.
Professional
* Act as an independent radiographic practitioner, meeting HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics.
* Use professional discretion and experience to ensure correct, professional and legal clinical practice.
* Maintain competence through continuing professional development, internal and external opportunities, and maintain an evidence portfolio.
* Participate in clinical audit and research and act on findings where possible.
* Assist with practical training of student radiographers, apprentices and assistant practitioners.
* Treat all patient information as confidential.
Communication
* Communicate effectively and appropriately with all users of the service, across all age groups and abilities, observing confidentiality and information governance.
* Explain procedures, pre‑ and post‑care, check allergies, follow up procedures and radiation issues.
* Discuss examination techniques, results and outcomes with radiologists and other healthcare professionals.
* Discuss patient examinations, preparation and post‑procedure care, diagnostic results and radiation issues with other health‑care professionals.
* Report issues affecting the X‑ray service to wards/departments.
Skills and Knowledge
* High levels of concentration required.
* Demonstrate coordination and sensory skills required for precise positioning of patients with narrow margin for error.

* Understanding of Ionising Radiation Regulations (2017) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations (2017).

Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) degree or Diploma in Diagnostic Radiology.
* Hold a current state registration certificate.
* Have portfolio evidence of CPD.
Experience
* Extended clinical role or management training.
* NHS experience.
