Overview
Warwickshire County Council is offering a trainee position to start a career as a Trading Standards Officer. The role covers a range of activity areas including animal health and welfare, fair trading, feed, food, product safety, and weights and measures. The trainee will work toward a recognised Level 6 qualification while gaining experience in investigative and enforcement work.
What will you be doing?
* Study and attain a Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship, leading to a professionally recognised qualification and ongoing development as a Trading Standards Officer.
* Conduct inspections, audits, investigations, and other enforcement or administrative activities relevant to the Trading Standards programme, including visiting farms, factories, and business premises to ensure compliance with legal standards and fair trading for Warwickshire residents.
* Sampling and testing foods, consumer goods such as toys, cosmetics, electrical items, and animal feed to check against legal standards.
* Advise businesses on how to comply with legislation to trade fairly and legally.
* Protect consumers by working with partners to tackle frauds and scams, including illegal tobacco, vapes, and underage sales.
* Investigate rogue traders, prepare criminal cases, and provide evidence in court, including collecting evidence, maintaining contemporaneous records, and report writing.
* Collaborate with Trading Standards colleagues nationally and with enforcement agencies such as the Police, HMRC, Environmental Health, and partner agencies like the Office for Product Safety & Standards and Public Health.
* Be supported through a structured training programme with a defined career path toward becoming a Trading Standards Officer across multiple disciplines.
About You
We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about consumer protection and Trading Standards, with excellent attention to detail, professional and personable conduct, and the ability to communicate well under pressure.
* Education: A good general education with a commitment to study towards a professional qualification. Minimum 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (including Maths and English Language) and 2 A Levels or equivalent.
* Skills: Strong communication and customer service skills, high attention to detail, good organisation, and the ability to understand and interpret complex legislation.
* Personal Qualities: Perseverance, patience, situational awareness, a questioning mindset, and the ability to remain calm in challenging circumstances.
* Driving Licence: A full UK driving licence (or working towards it) and use of a vehicle is desirable; pool cars are usually available for work activities.
