Overview
The post holder will support the colorectal nursing team in providing an evidence‑based Colorectal Service that delivers seamless care following agreed pathways. The role involves assessment of colorectal patients, development of individualized management plans with colorectal surgeons, and participation in the new Colorectal Cancer Patients in Oncology Clinic. Education to patients and excellent communication are essential.
Responsibilities
* Under the direction of Colorectal Nurse Specialists and colorectal surgical team, promote early supported discharge of CRC patients and discharge patients safely to reduce length of stay in line with national guidance.
* Ensure that the needs of all colorectal patients are recognised and met through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, promoting seamless patient journeys and acting as a liaison for MDT and multi‑agency working.
* Provide advice and support to patients undergoing colorectal/stoma care surgery and to ward staff regarding colorectal nursing/ERAS and stoma care.
* Participate in teaching programmes to educate and develop staff, patients and carers, sharing clinical and theoretical knowledge to promote research‑based practice.
* Maintain accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines.
* Undertake additional training to meet patient needs and register any additional skills acquired as a result of enhanced practice.
Qualifications
* Colorectal nursing/stoma care qualification or relevant experience in this area of nursing.
Working Environment
This role is based at Walsall Manor Hospital (Manor Hospital), the integrated NHS acute care provider for the Walsall area.
