Are you a strategic and hands-on leader with experience in school operations and finance? I'm partnering with a small but growing independent school to appoint a Bursar who will play a pivotal role in the smooth running and development of the school's business functions. This is a unique opportunity to join a nurturing and community-focused school environment that spans Nursery to Sixth Form, supporting a broad age range and dedicated teaching staff.
The Bursar will oversee all non-academic operations across the school, reporting directly to the Head and working closely with governors. You will lead on areas including finance, facilities, HR, compliance, and health & safety, while also managing the administrative support functions of both the Head Office and main school office.
Key responsibilities include:
Overseeing financial planning, budgeting, and reporting
Leading on facilities management, including site safety and maintenance
Ensuring compliance with health & safety regulations and risk assessments
Managing school administration teams (6-7 staff) and overseeing performance reviews
Walking the site regularly and maintaining a visible operational presence
Supporting with HR and recruitment processes where necessary
Contributing to strategic planning and advising senior leadership on operational matters
Ideal experience:
Proven experience in a school bursar, business manager, or operations leadership role
Strong understanding of finance, budgeting, and compliance in an educational setting
Excellent people management and interpersonal skills
A hands-on, pragmatic approach to problem-solving and decision-making
Comfortable working in a setting with evolving needs and priorities
Knowledge of independent school operations is highly desirable
