Job responsibilities
Leadership & strategic
* Act as the designated specialist for server and data storage infrastructure both on‑premises and within cloud environments.
* Responsibility for a portfolio of circa £5m of data and server infrastructure within the Trusts datacentres.
* Accountable for the line management of the Trusts Digital Infrastructure Solutions Teams, ensuring multidisciplinary staff are supported and developed.
* Work alongside the Head of Technical Services, the Head of Digital Strategy, and the wider Directorate Management Team, acting as the expert on matters of server and data infrastructure, operating systems, and application platforms in line with the Trusts Digital Strategy.
* Define and recommend technologies, infrastructure, and systems to support the Trusts Digital Strategy.
* Develop action plans and road‑maps to address key deliverables, and produce the investment cases to obtain necessary funding.
* Represent the Trust within the local Inter‑Service Collaboration (ICS) on matters of server and data infrastructure operations and strategy.
* Key member of the Digital Services Operational Committee, providing expert assurance on best practice to audits and the Data Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT).
* Act as a tactical advisor to the Gold or Silver Commander in any IT incident.
* Deputise for the Head of Technical Services as required.
Operational
1. Act as the Trust’s expert lead in providing knowledge and advice on server and data infrastructure, both physical and virtual, on‑premises and in the cloud, including Microsoft Windows Servers, Active Directory, Linux Servers, and enterprise‑class replicated data storage platforms.
2. Manage the Digital Services Infrastructure Solutions Teams to ensure day‑to‑day tasks are completed and project deliverables remain on track.
3. Ensure resilience, recovery, and business continuity plans for our server and data storage infrastructure are robust and meet required standards.
4. Monitor and manage server and data storage capacity and performance, ensuring sufficient resources are available.
5. Manage and monitor updates and security patch rollout to the estate, maintaining security postures.
6. Ensure open incidents and service requests are addressed according to existing SLA/KPI.
7. Provide regular performance metrics and reports on team performance.
8. Contribute to all security audits and any actions that arise, ensuring a remediation plan is in place.
9. Communicate/support all server and data infrastructure change requests via the Change Control Process within Digital Services and to relevant stakeholders.
10. Collaborate with the Digital Business Partners and divisional Heads of Service to enforce changes in working practices or urgent requirements, capturing clear requirements for annual plans.
Performance and financial management
* Responsible for infrastructure budgets, including £1m revenue and circa £750k capital annually.
* Ensure effective business justifications for allocation of required funding, with short‑ and long‑term remedial plans.
* Authorise invoices, supply requisitions, expenses and pay returns in line with all financial controls.
* Annually review all costs and ensure appropriate charges are processed timely.
* Create performance metrics and reports on server and data infrastructure to give executive‑level visibility.
Quality and Governance
* Comply with audit requests and other requirements.
* Lead on any server or data security assessments and penetration tests and contribute to associated action plans.
* Manage server and data related risks and issues, including ownership of infrastructure‑related Datix investigations.
* Support the gathering and presentation of metrics that demonstrate performance or non‑compliance within the estate.
* Promote a culture where governance and risk management are everyone's responsibility.
Communication
* Communicate complex information and negotiate contentious issues with Trust members at all levels, supporting local projects and ensuring all parties are briefed.
* Communicate effectively on complex subjects during high‑pressure situations associated with service downtime and delivery.
* Chair or deputise where appropriate at team/service level committee meetings, informing staff of updates or escalations.
* Contribute to effective communication within the Trust regarding changes to working practices or new innovations.
* Initiate promotion of the Trust’s vision for delivering excellence.
* Ensure good practices are shared and delivered at all levels.
Management
* Accountable for line management of the Digital Infrastructure Solutions Teams, supporting staff development.
* Responsible for recruitment and development, ensuring annual training programme coverage.
* Work within Trust policy and guidance, escalating where necessary.
* Responsible for IT policy and procedure creation, reviewing regularly when technology changes.
* Collaborate with Business and Live Services Manager for effective planning to respond to required changes.
* Contribute to strategic investment proposals, business cases and options appraisals.
* Promote a culture where staff feel empowered and accountable.
* Provide coaching and professional insight to colleagues, ensuring confidence and competence.
Professional
* Maintain and develop expert knowledge of current technologies and best practice developments within Server and Data infrastructure and wider IT disciplines.
* Maintain and continue with professional digital certifications where required.
* Manage workloads to make effective use of time in a highly pressurised environment.
* Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate to the grade.
* Participate in joint annual Personal Development Review with line manager.

Person Specification
Training and Qualifications
* Educated to postgraduate level or recent equivalent experience.
* Professional, managerial and leadership qualification or equivalent experience at senior management level.
* Technical professional qualification for a senior position or equivalent experience.
* Evidence of relevant continuing professional development.
* Recognised industry qualifications or equivalent experience and knowledge in desktop, server, virtualisation, storage, and networking disciplines to expert level.
Experience
* Demonstrable record in delivering complex targets and objectives to tight deadlines.
* Clear understanding of IT in a complex public sector organisation.
* Experience of budgetary management.
* Experience in developing technical strategies.
* In‑depth understanding of IT infrastructure, systems, and processes (e.g., networking, hardware, business continuity planning, security techniques, service desks).
* Proven experience of managing at senior level.
* Knowledge and understanding of NHS experience within a healthcare setting.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
* Clearly demonstrate sound judgement in dealing with stakeholders, healthcare partners, and suppliers.
* High level analytical skills and ability to draw qualitative and quantitative data from sources and present clearly.
