We are delighted to offer an exceptional Portfolio Pathway Specialty Doctor post, beginning August 2026. This tailormade fiveyear, inhouse programme provides immersive training in Emergency Medicine, supported by experienced consultants and a structured development pathway. You'll gain the breadth and depth of experience needed to build a strong portfolio for GMC Specialist Register application through the Portfolio Pathway route.

Throughout the programme, you will benefit from handson clinical exposure, supported learning, mentorship, and dedicated guidance as you progress toward specialist accreditation. The Emergency Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a dynamic, fast-paced clinical environment, providing care for a diverse city population ranging from those who live and work in the culturally vibrant centre to those living with the socio-economic challenges of the largest city in Scotland. We deliver Consultant led care 7 days a week until midnight and beyond (with a mix of overnight resident Consultant cover and enhanced middle grade cover) within an environment of continuous learning for the entire team. We have a 8 strong middle grade tier, a highly experienced cadre of nursing colleagues (many of whom are dual qualified as ENPs) and 27 doctors on our junior rota. The clinical team manage approximately 98,000 new presentations per year.

We have previously supported Specialty Doctors through their CESR (now Portfolio Pathway) application, including securing secondments in critical care. Two of our consultant team have progressed though the CESR route and we are dedicated to a programme of specific Portfolio Pathway development in the department

Glasgow Royal Infirmary Emergency Department is one of the busiest departments in Scotland. The ED comprises a 6 bed Resuscitation Room, 29 bed Majors hub, and a Minor

Injuries area. We manage a diverse and varied caseload from major trauma associated with a large city, acute medical and surgical presentations, through to minor injuries. We have been the principal receiving hospital in 3 recent major incidents and have well-rehearsed procedures for dealing with multiple casualties.

The department consistently delivers a high standard of clinical learning, recognised by National and Local Teaching Excellence Awards over the previous five years. We are evolving our education programme to involve the entire clinical team, with simulation training and employ clinical teaching fellows to support our junior medical and undergraduate education programme.

We have a dedicated Quality Improvement team to co-ordinate projects running across the department, involving both medical and nursing staff.

SPECIALTY DOCTOR Must Meet The Following Criteria

shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC); and
shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme or specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT); or
shall have equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas.
