Whilst the advert is for Fern Acute Ward – we will be engaging with our staff and SU’s about the name change, it will still be a 17 bed male acute ward

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of dedicated consultants and other members of the multidisciplinary teams to help shape a modernising mental health service, which has been transformed following recent changes in community settings and inpatient provision.

The consultant will work on the Inpatient Unit at North View, North Manchester General Hospital. The new post holder will have consultant responsibilities for Fern Acute Ward. They will provide leadership and medical input. They will fulfil the role of the Responsible Clinician. They will be involved in training junior doctors, teaching medical students and engage in clinical management, audit and governance.

The team consists of:

• 1 full time Consultant Psychiatrist
• 1 WTE Specialty Trainee or staff grade
• 1 Core Trainee/GP Trainee
• 1 Foundation year trainee (not guaranteed)
• 1 x WTE Consultant Psychologist (covering North View) with a team of psychologists/assistant psychologists
• 1 x WTE Ward Manager
• 2 x WTE Deputy Ward Manager/Charge Nurse
• 10 x WTE Registered Mental Health Nurses
• 10 x WTE Support workers
• 1 x WTE Occupational Therapists
• Access to Specialist Pharmacist
• Shared secretary

Main duties of the job

Clinical role

• Provide clinical leadership for the ward team and trainees.
• The ward has 17 beds and patients can be admitted from across the trust patch covering the boroughs of Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Bolton and Wigan.
• Conduct ward reviews, ward rounds, board rounds and support the team to complete CPA reviews.
• Undertake assessments of admissions to the service.
• Assist team to diagnose and formulate management plans in all presentations.
• Assessment and management of risk including of vulnerability, suicide risk, risks to health and safety and risk of harm to others.
• Coordinate care with input from pharmacists.
• Preparation of Mental Health Review Tribunal and Managers’ Hearings reports and attendance at subsequent hearings.
• Preparation of consent to treatment paperwork as well as any other MHA work such as section 17 leave, section renewals and CTOs if required.
• Be inquest supervisor for resident doctors attending medical inquests for incidents while clinical supervisor for the resident doctor.
• Work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary teams including external partners.

Leadership role

• Lead clinical decision making in the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high-quality care
• Develop service clinical priorities in line with national and professional guidance and standards

1. MB BS or equivalent medical qualification

2. Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
3. Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
4. Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
5. Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

The Trust mandates all post holders who require a DBS for their role to subscribe to the DBS Update Service. You will be required to enrol for this service for a fee of £16 per year and maintain registration throughout your employment with GMMH.
