Job Summary
The Senior Health Care Assistant (HCA) / Senior Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) is a member of the multidisciplinary team that delivers care to patients in acute hospital settings. The role is supervised by a Registered Professional and involves carrying out a range of patient care tasks to support efficient and effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities
* Demonstrate care and compassion to patients, carers and relatives.
* Perform patient care tasks directed by a Registered Professional, including feeding, bathing and repositioning.
* Report observed changes in patients’ physical and psychological needs.
* Carry out tests and record results (urinalysis, blood pressure, pregnancy testing, patient observations).
* Perform wound observation, dressings, peripheral cannula removal, stoma bag changing and report any issues.
* Respond to questions and enquiries from patients, carers and relatives; refer to the Registered Professional when appropriate.
* Assist the Registered Professional and other clinical team members as required.
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records, including fluid intake charts and patient documentation.
* Adhere to Trust policies, information governance, confidentiality and safety procedures.
* Support housekeeping and stock control and report equipment faults to the Registered Professional.
* Engage in ongoing personal development and training to enhance skills and career progress.
Essential Criteria
* Hold a Care Certificate issued by an NHS provider organisation (Care Certificate from NHS England or online training provider is not acceptable).
* Or have completed an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care from a UK college.
Qualifications
* Vocational qualification at Level III or equivalent experience.
* Care Certificate attainment.
* Effective written and verbal communication, literacy, numeracy and basic IT skills (minimum Level 1 Maths and English).
Experience
* Experience dealing with the general public.
* Experience working in a health or social care environment.
