The role
Salary: £78,000 - 81,000 per year Requirements: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Cisco CCNP or higher, or equivalent. Cloud networking certification (for example Azure or AWS) highly desirable. Security certifications such as CompTIA Security, CySA, or SSCP are advantageous. Minimum 10 years experience in enterprise network engineering with proven team leadership and workload management responsibility. Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and supporting SD-WAN, large-scale Wi-Fi, NAC, and firewall solutions in hybrid cloud and on-prem environments. Experience leading a small team of engineers, including resource planning. Track record of leading network changes in high-availability, mission-critical environments with minimal downtime. Experience collaborating with third-party vendors and suppliers to deliver critical services and oversee SLA compliance. Expert knowledge of routing and switching, including BGP, static routing, route redistribution, VLANs, trunking, STP variants, and LACP/EtherChannel. Significant knowledge of cloud networking principles and services such as Azure or AWS, Express Routes, vNets, route tables, and security appliances. Expert understanding of networking protocols and infrastructure including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, 802.1x, SD-WAN, PKI, RADIUS, QoS, IP addressing, and subnetting. Substantial experience with firewalls, including policy and object configuration, IPS/IDS, web filtering, application control, SSL inspection, VPNs, IPsec tunnels, HA clusters, segmentation, and NAT. Proven ability to implement and maintain robust network security controls, logging, monitoring, IDS/IPS, NAC, and network segmentation. Proficiency with SNMP, syslog, SIEM, and network automation, capacity planning, and monitoring tools. Strong understanding of common networking attack vectors and defense-in-depth strategies. Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and control frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST CSF, and CIS Controls. Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical detail into business-friendly risk insights. Strong collaboration skills across infrastructure, application, and business teams. Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision. Strong process discipline, with the ability to meet deadlines and adhere to SLAs and standards. High level of ethics and confidentiality when handling sensitive information. Responsibilities: Own the design, architecture, and continuous improvement of our network solutions. Ensure secure, resilient, scalable, and high-performing connectivity across 1,000 sites and corporate environments. Lead, mentor, and develop our network engineering team, including workload, performance, and professional growth. Allocate tasks, set priorities, and ensure delivery of high-quality support and project outcomes within agreed SLAs. Oversee the operational integrity of our WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, and cloud-based network services. Manage incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis for complex network issues. Own network device configuration management, backup, and disaster recovery processes. Enforce network security baselines and compliance with internal policies and external standards. Work with our Security team on vulnerability management, incident response, and audit readiness. Act as the primary technical authority with network service providers and hardware vendors. Manage SLA adherence, capacity planning, and service improvement with suppliers. Coordinate change windows, communications, and post-change validation with business and IT stakeholders. Own network documentation, including diagrams, inventories, runbooks, and change records. Contribute to architecture standards, design reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives. Participate in an on-call rota for major incidents. Perform occasional travel to sites and data centres.
