Professional Member Non-Executive Director (Member of Council)
Council and its delegated bodies are responsible for the co-ordination and strategic management and oversight of The Welding Institute group of companies. The organisation is managed on a day-to-day basis by a Chief Executive Officer and an Executive Board. All eligible Professional Members of The Welding Institute are invited to apply for a place on Council.
The TWI Group is a cutting-edge world-wide membership-based independent research organisation, specialising in materials, joining and structural integrity technologies. Our mission is to help industry solve problems through independent advice and developing the next generation of experts to address future industry challenges. Group operational turnover was £63m in 2021 with profits of £129m in 2022 (which mostly came from a once-off property deal).
As a non-profit distributing entity, all surplus generated by the group goes back into serving our purpose. We achieve this by reinvesting into research, staff, equipment and buildings to better serve our members.
The TWI governing body, known as Council (comprising of Non-Executive Directors), assists with the oversight and governance of the business through working in collaboration with the Chief Executive and an Executive Board.
We have an exciting opportunity to appoint new Industrial, Professional and Co-opted Member Non–Executive Directors to join as Members of Council to participate in boards and committees according to their skills and we are keen to attract candidates with the following skills, qualifications and/or knowledge to support and strengthen effective decision-making of Council: Property, Commercial Governance, Finance and People & Culture.
To be eligible you will need to be a professional member of The Welding Institute
, you ideally will have board or senior management experience, a strong understanding of good corporate governance and an ability to scrutinise and challenge company performance. We welcome applications from a diverse range of social and economic groups and especially from underrepresented groups. This is a non-remunerated role and requires a time commitment of up to eight days per annum however, reasonable expenses will be paid for attending meetings.

This position will require a BPSS check which TWI will carry out.
Travel
: Council-related activities typically require around 8 days of engagement per year, which may include attending meetings in Cambridge. While these meetings can be joined remotely, we encourage in-person attendance where possible to support collaboration. Please note that the overall time commitment may vary depending on individual involvement in Council responsibilities beyond formal meetings.
