Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Occupational therapist to join our Integrated Community Stroke Therapy Team, based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary Hospital, working across both inpatient and community settings. This position will be a fixed-term opportunity, covering for maternity leave.
Our Stroke Therapy Team operates within a culture of a strong, supportive multi-disciplinary team which consists of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists as well as Assistant Practitioners. We promote an inter-disciplinary approach. We work together to support patients to choose, set and work towards meeting goals, helping to enable positive rehabilitation outcomes and facilitate timely discharge from hospital.
Our Stroke Therapy Team is committed to facilitating an environment which promotes professional development and engagement with research opportunities. This both in house and in collaboration with local universities. There is encouragement given to engage with regular clinical and managerial supervision, to help promote personal professional development and an interdisciplinary approach is taken with the facilitation of clinical supervision for our Assistant Practitioners .
Main duties of the job
We are able to offer you the opportunity to join our interdisciplinary Stroke Therapy team and develop your clinical knowledge and skills.
You will primarily work in an acute hospital, based at the RIL. However, therem ay be opportunities to gain experience across our community pathway too.
Staff develop their knowledge and skills using our appraisal process and we actively support staff through supervision with in-service training opportunities and a peer support group.
Requirements:-
- You will have A Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists
- Registration with HCPC as an Occupational Therapist
- The ability to travel between sites and in the community.

Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Person specification
Experience
* Comprehensive experience at under graduate level of the core competencies within Occupational Therapy
* OT practice placement experience or post registration work experience in an acute hospital setting as an OT, achieving knowledge and skills applicable to this post
Skills, ability and knowledge
* Understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice
* Assessment, observation, evaluation and reporting skills
* Ability to work single handed with individuals/groups of patients with access to guidance from a Specialist or Advanced OT either on site or by telephone in the absence of own supervisor
* Basic knowledge of health and social care legislation and guidelines e.g. National service Frameworks (NSF’s) and National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for clinical conditions and application to OT practice
* Basic knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, confidentiality and health and Safety
* Written and oral communication skills in English sufficient to communicate effectively with patients to gain consent and explain treatment interventions and gain information required for the patient’s medical/social history relevant to OT
* Basic computer skills e.g. word processing, email and internet skills
* Knowledge of current evidence based practice in OT
* Competent skills in risk assessment and risk management
* Supervisory skills
Personal Abilities
* Ability to travel for the assessment of patients in the community and between the Trust sites as required
Education and qualifications
* Health and Care Professions Council registered Occupational Therapist
* Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the College of OT, UK, (For staff who trained pre 1980’s a Degree in OT was not available – either qualification is acceptable for this post)
* Comprehensive experience at under graduate level of the core competencies within Occupational Therapy
* Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists
