Job Description
We're looking for a Design Engineer to join our Design team based in Leeds.
The role will involve designing and delivering complex construction engineering services, including temporary works, traffic management, construction materials, ground engineering and surveying. You will support Kier in contributing to the delivery of a broad range of complex services, lead the delivery of some services, and provide solutions that are safe and buildable.
Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire
Hours: 40 hours per week – some flexibility on hours available.
Responsibilities
* Agree with the client on technical requirements and ensure full understanding.
* Lead the development of fee proposals and comply with delegated authority policy.
* Organise and lead the day‑to‑day workload of engineers and technical staff within the design team.
* Ensure technical compliance of designs with remit, legal requirements and company policies (including CDM Regulations, the Kier SHE Management System (SHEMS) and design Quality Management System (QMS)).
* Oversee and contribute to the production of design deliverables such as calculations, drawings, reports and design risk assessments.
* Identify and assess technical opportunities for value engineering, and implement them with suitable approval.
* Develop and maintain a positive relationship with the client / design / site teams.
* Represent the project at client meetings and progress meetings, managing financial and commercial aspects with support from the Engineering Manager and Commercial Manager.
* Monitor progress against agreed programme and budget, maintaining project documentation and records.
* Provide regular project reports (financial updates, programme forecasts) and early warnings on issues such as significant overspends.
* Review monthly invoices and seek regular formal or informal feedback from clients.
* Document lessons learned and ensure continuous improvement within Kier Design.
Qualifications
* Completed IEng Initial Professional Development (or CEng equivalent progress) with a relevant professional institution (e.g., ICE) and practical industry‑relevant experience.
* Hold Level 6 or Level 7 qualifications and significant relevant experience.
* Proven experience of designing temporary works.
