Role Overview
As Principal Marine Ecologist, you will work across a range of national and international projects, including offshore wind, interconnectors, habitat restoration, flood defence, and coastal developments. Working in our Nature team, you will provide technical marine ecological advice, lead projects, support business development, and mentor junior colleagues.
Responsibilities
* Serve as the subject‑matter expert, providing marine ecological and marine consenting advice to project teams and external stakeholders. Direct inputs across project workstreams and deliverables, including full EIA or DCO development cycles and marine ecology impact assessments (ES chapters, HRA, MCZ, WFD) and supporting licence & permitting applications.
* Ensure quality and compliance of deliverables to the highest standards, leveraging rigorous quality management procedures. Write and communicate complex scientific information for varied audiences.
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team—underwater acoustics, coastal processes, water scientists, marine archaeologists, and EIA specialists—to improve environmental outcomes.
* Contribute to business development, developing technical and fee proposals, marketing activities, and client liaison. Present to internal and external audiences.
* Manage projects, resources, and budgets, reporting progress internally and to clients. Pursue AECOM accredited project management training and procure specialist subcontractors when needed.
* Mentor and train marine ecology team members to foster a supportive, high‑performance environment.
Qualifications
* Comprehensive marine ecological expertise with demonstrable experience in preparing and reviewing specialist technical chapters and impact assessments (EIA, HRA, MCZ, WFD).
* Detailed knowledge of marine consenting and licensing regimes across the UK and experience liaising with key regulatory agencies (MMO, NRW, Scottish MD, The Crown Estate).
* Ability to apply advanced scientific practices, theories, and technologies across diverse marine projects.
* Experience coordinating teams, including line management and mentorship of junior staff.
* Business development experience, including tenders and client presentations.
