Job Description
At HR Wallingford, we design smart, resilient solutions across the natural and built environments to help everyone live and work more sustainably with water. By harnessing research, data insights, and the power of our collective expertise, we help the world to better understand the changing influence and impact of water.
We’re looking for a practical, detail-oriented Instrumentation Technician to join our team in Eccles. You will have the opportunity to work on meaningful, real-world engineering challenges.
You’ll assemble, test, and maintain high-precision instrumentation used in hydrodynamic modelling. This includes working with electromechanical systems, supporting calibration and fault diagnosis, and contributing to the development of innovative new products.
To succeed in this role, you should have completed an apprenticeship in small to medium-scale production and hold a further education qualification in a mechanical or electrical subject (such as HNC, HND, or similar). You should have a strong interest in electromechanical systems.
Additionally, you should have at least a good GCSE (or equivalent) in English and ideally possess 2 to 3 years of experience in building or maintaining instrumentation to meet customer-driven deadlines. You’ll be comfortable reading engineering drawings and following manufacturing protocols, and you’ll understand the importance of documentation and quality control. Practical skills like soldering, wiring, and mechanical assembly are essential. Experience with optical encoders, telemetry systems, or load cell transducers would be a bonus, though training can be provided.
This is a varied, hands-on role where you’ll be expected to work independently at times, contribute to a collaborative team, and occasionally support international projects. You’ll also be involved in producing technical reports and ensuring all equipment meets the highest standards of accuracy and safety.
This role could be a great fit if you enjoy building things, solving problems, and learning new skills in a supportive, skilled team.
In return, we offer a dynamic working environment, development opportunities, and excellent benefits.
Interview Process: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a first-stage interview in Eccles, Manchester. This role needs to be within a good commutable distance to our offices. Further information, along with a full job specification and details on our benefits, can be found on our website.
Salary: From £28,000 depending on experience.
To apply, please submit your CV with a covering letter. The closing date for this role is 9th August 2025.
If you are excited about this role but unsure if you’re the right fit, we encourage you to apply. We’re happy to answer any questions by email.
