Job Description:

Job Information

Achieving for Children is a Community Interest Company with a public sector ethos, combined with the freedom to innovate, enabling us to do things differently. As a not-for-profit social enterprise owned by three local authorities (Windsor & Maidenhead, Kingston, and Richmond), we offer the benefits of a social enterprise with local government employment benefits. To learn more about us,

Assistant Tribunal and Mediations Officer

We seek an enthusiastic, well-organized, and motivated professional dedicated to supporting children and young people with SEN. The role requires excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Responsibilities include supporting our tribunals and mediations manager in service delivery. Prior SEN knowledge is required; experience in mediations and tribunals is beneficial but not essential, as we support learning and development for the right candidate.

About the role

As the Assistant Tribunal and Mediation Officer, you will represent AfC and support multidisciplinary professionals involved in SEND appeals and mediations. Collaboration with legal teams is crucial to ensure effective representation and decision-making.

Your responsibilities include:

* Working with the Tribunal Manager to develop and improve tribunal and mediation systems and processes.
* Managing casework, preparing responses, and representing AfC in appeals and mediations when necessary.
* Identifying opportunities to de-escalate issues before formal appeals.
* Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of SEND legislation (Children & Families Act, Children Act, Equalities Act, etc.) and relevant case law.
* Building positive relationships with children, young people, and families, especially during challenging times.

You will also attend SEND panels and deliver internal and external training related to SEND tribunals and mediations.

For an informal discussion, please contact Katie Worley, Associate Director for SEND.

About you

* Degree-level education with relevant professional qualification or Level 3+ training in SEND (Desirable).
* Experience and knowledge in SEND (Essential).
* Proven ability to build partnerships and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
* Knowledge of representing the Local Authority at SEND and Disability Tribunals, especially in lower-risk appeals.
* Experience in mediation and dispute resolution with parents and professionals.
* Skilled in arranging and chairing conferences and handling First Tier Tribunal duties.
* Ability to prepare responses for appeals, coordinate with legal and SEND teams, and advise on legal aspects.

Our benefits

We promote a positive, supportive environment with extensive resources, a competitive salary, and flexible hybrid working. Benefits include:

* 29 days annual leave, increasing to 33 days after 2 years and 35 days after 4 years, plus a day off for your birthday (or non-working periods for term-time workers).
* Tailored induction sessions.
* Local Government salary and pension schemes.
* Flexible working options.
* Employee Assistance Programme.
* Staff benefits and discounts.
* Comprehensive learning and development opportunities.
