Job Duties
The selected individual will join the department's academic support staff and report to the Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Support and assist with the day-to-day operations of NSU’s Athletics Academic Support program. The successful candidate will coordinate academic support for individual members of assigned teams. This position is responsible for providing academic counseling and support for student-athletes to ensure they are meeting NCAA, University and conference requirements for successful progress towards degree. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to: evaluating transcripts of incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes to determine eligibility, monitoring class attendance, developing course schedules to ensure successful academic progress, preparing progress reports, monitoring class attendance, monitoring study hall, assist with the athletics department’s Summer Bridge program, Spartan Youth club activities, SAAC activities and other duties as assigned.
Individuals interested in this position must be self-motivated and be able to work a flexible schedule. This position requires non-traditional hours and some travel is required. The individual must adhere to Commonwealth of Virginia, Norfolk State University, NCAA and MEAC rules, regulations and policies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education, athletic administration, or a related field.
1 year of experience as a graduate assistant in an athletics academic support program or experience in teaching or academic advising in a university setting.
Computer knowledgeable.
excellent speaking/writing ability, familiarity with intercollegiate athletics, and familiarity with academic advising.
Additional Considerations
Master's degree in counseling, education, student development, athletic administration or related field preferred.
Two or more years’ experience as an academic coordinator/ academic advisor in a college/university setting, counseling, and knowledge of NCAA Bylaw 14.
Excellent speaking/writing ability.
