The Senior Estimating Engineer is responsible for leading the preparation of accurate and competitive multi-utility estimates, supporting the pre-construction phase of projects across electric, gas, water, and EV infrastructure scopes. This role involves detailed technical assessment, client liaison, commercial negotiation, and close coordination with DNOs, IDNOs, and suppliers to ensure delivery of compliant, cost-effective, and value-driven proposals.
Your New Role
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Interpret electric, gas, water, and EV plans, bills of quantities, and technical documents to produce accurate cost estimates.
2. Conduct desktop surveys and liaise with clients to clarify requirements and constraints.
3. Obtain and review connection offers from Network Operators and IDNOs.
4. Request and evaluate Asset Value quotations to support commercial submissions.
5. Prepare route plans, preliminary designs, and scope documentation in line with standards and regulations (e.g., G81).
6. Develop clear and concise scopes of work and pricing breakdowns for customer proposals.
7. Lead design review meetings with customers, DNOs, IDNOs, and internal stakeholders.
8. Manage and submit connection applications, providing ongoing technical support throughout the process.
9. Ensure all outputs are delivered on time, meet customer requirements, and align with budget expectations.
10. Conduct peer reviews and technical audits of design outputs from other team members.
11. Maintain working knowledge of industry standards and changes in regulation.
12. Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior colleagues.
13. Oversee design change control and variation pricing throughout the project lifecycle.
14. Handover approved costings to construction, ensuring a smooth transition.
15. Report monthly on estimating activity and project status to the Head of Sales.
16. Deliver accurate, compliant, and commercially sound estimates to support business growth.
17. Convert estimates into secured projects in line with sales targets and margin expectations.
18. Maintain high standards of customer service and professionalism in all client interactions.
19. Support continuous improvement across the tendering process and contribute to the development of internal tools/templates.
20. Work closely with suppliers to ensure pricing, availability, and compliance.
21. Embed best practices and lessons learned into all estimation activities.
22. Support a culture of quality, technical excellence, and team collaboration.
23. Act as a senior technical point of contact internally and externally.
24. This role will also line manage the estimating team, providing leadership, technical support, and mentoring to ensure a high standard of output and consistent development of team capability.
About You
Required Qualifications & Professional Membership(s):
* Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related field (e.g., Utilities, Mechanical Engineering).
* Full UK driving licence.
* Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., IET) is desirable.
Knowledge & Experience:
* In-depth knowledge of utility infrastructure design and costing (LV/HV electric, gas, water, EV).
* Familiarity with ENA Engineering Recommendation G81 and associated design standards.
* Previous experience in a senior estimating or design role within an ICP, DNO, or utility contractor.
* Proficiency in relevant estimation software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS tools, MS Excel).
* Proven ability to work with IDNOs and DNOs to manage connection processes.
* Demonstrable commercial awareness and supplier engagement skills.
* Experience in managing multiple complex projects in parallel.
