We are recruiting a Head of Risk for our Risk team. The successful individual will report to the Director of Risk (also the firm’s COLP and MLRO).
The team
The Risk Management Department – which comprises the Risk team and the Business Acceptance team - is led by the firm’s Director of Risk. The Risk team is currently made up of a Senior Risk Lawyer, a Risk Lawyer and a Risk Practice Executive.
The role
The successful candidate will work alongside the Head of Business Acceptance in supporting the Director of Risk in ensuring that the firm and its people comply with their legal and regulatory obligations.
The Head of Risk will assist the Director of Risk in setting the firm’s risk management strategy and reviewing the firm’s existing systems and controls, as well as proactively monitoring the ongoing effectiveness of the firm’s risk management policies and procedures. This role requires a commercial and pragmatic approach to risk management, whilst ensuring that the firm remains protected against financial, legal and reputational risks. The Head of Risk will be expected to be a trusted and approachable resource for all Partners and staff.
This role will also supervise and manage the Risk team, providing direction, support and professional development, whilst also assisting them with their workload. The Risk team responds to a range of legal and regulatory queries from both fee earners and business services staff, which includes advising on professional conduct obligations, compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules, reviewing client terms and/or proposed amendments to the firm’s terms of business, engagement terms, data protection compliance (including responding to data subject requests and dealing with data breaches) and reviewing supplier contracts.
The individual will also provide support to the Director of Risk, as required, on SRA matters (including preparing for visits, responding to enquiries and making reports), dealing with conflicts queries and dealing with claims and complaints.
Key duties will include:
* deputising for the Director of Risk, where required;
* developing, updating and implementing the firm's risk management policies and procedures;
* identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks related to legal and regulatory compliance, and maintaining the firm’s Risk Register;
* ensuring compliance with SRA Standards and Regulations, and other relevant legal and regulatory requirements;
* managing internal risk audits;
* working closely with the firm’s finance team (particularly cashiers) to consult on compliance with the SRA Accounts rules;
* developing risk training and awareness programs for employees at all levels;
* overseeing data protection risk management, ensuring compliance with UK GDPR and other relevant legislation;
* supporting the firm’s partners by providing expert guidance on risk matters;
* monitoring and report on emerging risks, regulatory changes and industry trends; and
* assisting with investigating and managing claims, complaints and SRA matters.
This job description encompasses the main duties of the role and is by no means exhaustive. It is anticipated that duties may vary from time to time according to the needs of the department.
The candidate
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Risk who has worked within a law firm either as a senior risk lawyer or in a similar role and has experience in leading projects and dealing with day-to-day queries with minimal supervision, as well as line management responsibilities.
Qualifications and experience
* qualified solicitor or barrister with at least ten years’ post-qualification experience as a risk lawyer in a law firm.
