We are a UKAS and IBMS accredited department serving a major university teaching hospital with many clinical specialties. The laboratories utilise state‑of‑the‑art equipment. We provide a comprehensive range of haematology and blood transfusion laboratory services and specialty diagnostic testing and reference work for leukaemia, haemostasis, thrombosis and haemoglobinopathies.
Location and Hours
The post holder will be required to work at all Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites, dependent on the needs of the service. The department is looking for an individual to work primarily at our Trafford General Hospital Campus. Flexibility in working contracted hours and adjustment when necessary to meet the service needs of the department is required.
Responsibilities
* Act as an Associate Practitioner assisting HCPC‑registered staff within the Laboratory Haematology Clinical Service.
* Prepare and sort patient samples, load samples onto analysers, and perform routine instrument maintenance.
* Supervise medical laboratory assistants and trainee associate practitioners.
* Perform specialised and non‑routine tests and procedures to a high degree of accuracy and precision, using manual pipetting and a variety of specialised sample preparation techniques under the supervision of an HCPC‑registered BMS.
* Assist with stock control and adherence to external quality assurance schemes.
* Use automated devices proficiently, oversee their operation by medical laboratory assistants, ensuring SOPs are followed and reviewed as required.
* Perform quality control and quality assurance checks.
* Train and assess users as appropriate.
Qualifications
* Motivated and enthusiastic individual, ideally with haematology laboratory experience.
* Active knowledge of laboratory working, including health and safety awareness and a basic practical and theoretical knowledge of both routine and specialist methods employed.
