An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Speech and Language Therapy Adult team in GG+C to provide a Speech and Language Therapy service to the Regional Major Trauma Hyperacute Service based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH). The post is full time, at Band 6.
The West of Scotland Major Trauma Network is a collaboration of 6 NHS Boards (Ayrshire and Arran; Dumfries and Galloway; Forth Valley; Lanarkshire; Greater Glasgow and Clyde; Highland (Argyll and Bute CHP) and the Scottish Ambulance Service. The network provides all aspects of trauma care from the point of injury to rehabilitation.
The Hyperacute Major Trauma team which was set up in 2023 currently works on an in-reach basis providing specialist assessment and treatment of complex Cat A trauma patients as per BSRM guidelines on the QEUH site. The hyperacute team includes Clinical/Neuro Psychologists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Therapy Support Workers.
Due to an identified gap in service provision, further AHP rehabilitation posts have been created to ensure equity of service provision for all trauma patients irrespective of their ward location or injury complexity.
Hyperacute patients have suffered a traumatic injury which has resulted in them having a variety of complex rehabilitation needs which requires a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary approach to assessment and treatment. These patients have often suffered a traumatic brain injury and present with a variety of complex needs and will be recognised under the major trauma service.
You will gain experience in managing patients with complex swallowing and communication difficulties across critical care, acute trauma and the specialist rehab unit. In service training and joint working/treatment planning with a range of AHPs will form part of this role.
As a relatively new service, MT is committed to demonstrating outcomes and contribution to service evaluation via quality improvement and clinical governance is essential to this job.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to increase their skills in MDT working, understanding complex conditions and providing early education, support and liaison to patients and their relatives.
You may be asked to work in other areas of the service as required. The post is 5 days over 7 with a rota for weekend working.
The Adult Acute Service is committed to offering all staff the opportunity to develop clinical skills with a varied caseload, and also offers appraisal, supervision and opportunities for Continuing Professional Development. It is essential you have a Degree in Speech and Language Therapy with current HCPC registration.
