Offer description

Could you be passionate about making a significant contribution to ensuring that patients with leukaemia, lymphoma, aplastic anaemia and immune deficiency disorders receive the highest quality and most effective treatments and care to live well?

The British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BSBMTCT) is seeking to appoint a 0.8 WTE Chief Executive, initially for 18 months, to lead the work of the Society and its national data registry.

Working for BSBMTCT offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on both the clinical community and the lives of patients. As a Society we are patient focused, inclusive and collaborative, and committed to improving outcomes through high quality, innovative work. Our culture reflects a strong sense of community and partnership across the UK and internationally.

In a rapidly evolving landscape shaped by novel cellular therapies, BSBMTCT plays a vital role in developing clinical guidelines, supporting research, analysing national data, influencing policy and advocating for patients. Our team works with leading experts in stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy, united by a shared mission to improve care and advance the field.

Staff are hosted by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and benefit from NHS employment while contributing directly to improving patient survival and quality of life.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the senior executive of the British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BSBMTCT) and its UK and Republic of Ireland Registry. The CEO holds corporate responsibility for the organisation’s strategic leadership, operational delivery, financial sustainability, governance, workforce leadership, and national and international influence.

Working to strategic aims set by the Board of Trustees, the CEO exercises significant professional autonomy and judgement in determining how these aims are achieved. The role involves complex and high-impact decision-making in environments characterised by uncertainty, competing priorities, financial risk, regulatory requirements, and reputational sensitivity.

The CEO provides executive leadership to ensure the effective delivery of BSBMTCT’s nationally significant functions, including oversight of a major clinical registry that informs NHS commissioning, service planning, research, clinical standards, policy development, and patient outcomes across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The CEO also acts as principal executive advisor to the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, ensuring they receive timely, high-quality information, professional advice, and assurance to support effective governance and informed strategic decision-making.

The British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BSBMTCT) is the professional society for bone marrow and stem cell transplant centres across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Forty-nine NHS and private member centres contribute data to the BSBMTCT Registry, established in 2001 as the UK subset of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) registry.

Our purpose is to improve patient outcomes – both survival and quality of life – by advancing the fields of blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy. We strive for a world where all transplant and cellular therapy patients receive the highest-quality and most effective treatments and care they need to live well.

Our mission is to represent and advocate for transplantation and cellular therapy professionals; maintain a comprehensive registry of stem cell transplants and cellular therapies across the UK and Republic of Ireland; provide high-quality data and insight to support research, commissioning, policy and clinical practice; facilitate pioneering research and clinical trials; deliver education and training for professionals; develop guidelines and quality standards that safeguard patients and support clinical excellence; and provide accessible information that empowers patients and the public.

We are guided by values that are patient-focused, inclusive, collaborative, quality-driven, innovative, and committed to improving outcomes.
