Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Discharge Lounge as a Healthcare Support Worker! (FTC - Maternity Leave Cover)
The discharge lounge is a dedicated area within Southmead Hospital where patients wait for their discharge medications, transport home, or collection by family/friends. The Discharge Lounge is run daily to support inpatient flow and supports all inpatient wards, outpatients, theatres and the Emergency Department.
Our main goal is to free up bed capacity at the earliest opportunity within the Trust to aid early patient flow from the front door whilst still achieving a safe and caring environment for our patients.
We are a small team of 5 Registered Nurses and 5 Healthcare Support Workers that work hard to provide a service 7 days a week (we only work day shifts, no nights).
We collect patients from the wards when they are medically fit for discharge and help to facilitate an easy discharge.
Unfortunately we are not able to offer visa sponsorship on this role.
Main duties of the job
Working As a Healthcare Support Worker, You Will Be Involved With Direct Patient Care Whilst Maintaining The Privacy And Dignity Of Patients. You Will Be Part Of a Team To Provide Essential Nursing Care And Helping Your Patients With Daily Living Tasks Such As
* helping patients feel comfortable and move around
* monitoring patients
* dressing patients and helping them go to the toilet
* serving meals and helping to feed patient
This position requires manual handling, pushing patients on wheelchair, helping them to toilet, assist patients in bed and help pat slide. We also offer regular drinks and refreshments.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Nursing Care (under indirect supervision, once deemed competent)
* Develop the skills to obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies.
* Under supervision follow individual patient care plans and report any changes immediately to the Registered Nurse/Assistant Practitioner.
* Participate in basic patient assessment whilst providing personal care and feeding back to the registered nurse to ensure high standards of care, in particular relating to skin integrity and the alertness of the patient
* Practice safe standards of care to patients following Trust guidelines and policies and be able to concentrate for periods throughout the day with occasional interruptions.
* Ensure care is given in accordance with the infection prevention and health and safety policies and procedures.
* Ensure that the patients bed space is clean, tidy, and accessible and that the person has what they need within easy reach.
* Develop the skills to actively facilitate self-care and independence with patients.
* Promote health education specific to the clinical area and in line with national and local policies
* Develop the skills to maintain effective record keeping and communication with patients, relatives, and members of the Multidisciplinary team regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a range of appropriate communication skills.
* Ensuring equipment and stores are well maintained, taking appropriate action if the equipment is faulty
* Work effectively as part of a team.
Person specification
Education
Essential criteria
* Level 2 QCF Diploma in Clinical Healthcare support or Level 2 NVQ in Healthcare Health & Social Care or Level 2 in Health & Social care (NVQ, QCF, RQF) Or Willingness to undertake appropriate training & qualifications within given time frames
Desirable criteria
* GCSE A*- D in English Language, or equivalent (e.g. Certificate in Adult Literacy at Level 1)
* GCSE A* - D, or equivalent in Mathematics (e.g. Certificate in Adult Numeracy at level 1)
Work Experience
Essential criteria
* Be able to work as a member of a team
* Experience of time management and prioritising work
* Understands and committed to a caring approach to patients & relatives
Desirable criteria
* Experience of providing care in a healthcare or social setting
Skills
Essential criteria
* Effective and appropriate communication skills both written and verbal
* IT skills, basic word, Email, keyboard skills
* Ability to work with minimum supervision to a high standard
* Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately
Desirable criteria
* Enthusiasm and commitment to working within the healthcare setting
