Specialty Doctor – Older People’s Services

UHD requires a Geriatric Medicine Speciality Doctor to fulfil the roles within our Older People’s Services and Acute Care directorate. The post holder will be predominantly ward based and gain a wide range of experience and undertake on call working 8 PA’s a week.

The role will be required to work with other grades of staff, and help out with ward rounds, admitting patients and clinics.

Main duties of the job

• Working alongside our existing specialty doctors and trainee Geriatric registrars to provide care to inpatients including new admissions
• Supervision and support of junior medical colleagues, Physician Associates and Advanced Nurse Practitioners/Advanced Clinical Practitioners
• Attending ward multidisciplinary meetings
• Attending and contributing to educational sessions and Clinical Governance meetings
• Teaching Medical and Physician's Associates students
• Participating in the hospital appraisal process as part of ongoing professional development
• Potential weekend working within the ortho-geriatric service

Relocation and Travel

There is a planned move for this service where this role and base of work will relocate to the Bournemouth Hospitalsite. Upon relocation, excess mileage allowance / reimbursement will not apply, and any travel between the postholder's home and work base will be classified as a commute. Any other changes unrelated to this will be handled in line with Trust/National terms and conditions.

As part of our commitment to delivering high‑quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out‑of‑hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA’s will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.

Job responsibilities

The Older People’s Services Department is staffed with 35 Consultant Geriatricians as well as other junior medical colleagues and a team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
• Ability to prioritise workload and use initiative
• Ability to know own limitations and when to seek help
• Meet the requirements of the GMC's Good Medical Practice
• Full GMC registration
• Computer literacy
• Evidence of team leadership
• Positive and engaging attitude towards all staff groups

Experience and Training

• Successful completion of foundation competencies
• Completed training to IMT2 level
• Experience working within Geriatric Medicine
• Evidence of MRCP part 1 (and parts 2 if applicable)
• Compliance with mandatory training
• ALS licence to practice
• Speak English at level necessary for the role
