Adult Critical Care Unit

Band 5 Staff Nurse in Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU)

We are excited to invite applications for the Band 5 Staff Nurse post to join our world-class Adult Cardiac Critical Care Unit (ACCU) at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Heart Centre. This is a unique opportunity to rotate across three critical care units, each caring for a diverse range of patients, including:

1. Post-operative cardiothoracic and thoracic patients
2. Heart Attack Centre patients
3. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) patients
4. Vascular patients
5. Cancer patients

Your professional development is a priority for us, and we offer opportunities to undertake courses such as ILS, ALS, CALS, BSc, MSc, and even PhD programmes. We also support nurse-led research, fully backed by our Director of Research and Development.

This role will involve shift patterns of long days, nights and bank holidays to meet the service requirements of the ACCU.

Main duties of the job

Assess, plan, provide, and evaluate skilled evidence-based care for critically ill patients (L2 & L3). Ensuring quality care and patient safety are paramount.

Support and develop colleagues by mentoring and assessing their skills.

Promote practice development within Critical Care.

Fulfil Local/Trust requirements in specified audit or project work.

Maintain a safe working environment, complying with Health and Safety regulations, Environmental Health Act, and attending mandatory training.

Provide skilled support to medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Essential criteria

6. Registered Nurse (RN1) with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of UK
7. Degree or equivalent in relevant field of study
8. Intravenous accreditation
9. Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

10. Prep for mentorship course or equivalent
11. Evidence of professional development e.g. Acute care skills training

Experience

Essential criteria

12. Previous experience in an acute setting post qualification.

Desirable criteria

13. Experience in caring for level 2/3 patients in critical care/high dependency setting or other acute setting.

Skills

Essential criteria

14. Capable of effectively managing and organising tasks in a dynamic and fast-paced setting
15. Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on precision and attention to detail.
16. Demonstrates the ability to maintain composure and handle high-stress situations with ease.
17. Exhibits emotional resilience and empathy when interacting with patients and their families.
18. Skilled in utilising IT and clinical information systems for care coordination and documentation
19. Demonstrates adept critical thinking abilities and prioritises patient care based on urgency
20. Displays effective interpersonal skills and collaborates well within a team, fostering a conducive environment for teaching and receiving feedback.
21. Shows evidence of contributing to ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
22. Proficient in utilising and interpreting advanced monitoring equipment
23. Capable of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care programs
24. Competent in providing basic life support
25. Able to administer prescribed medications, including blood transfusions
26. Capable of supervising and instructing junior or unqualified staff members
27. Possesses an understanding of Audit and Research-Based Nursing Practice
