Overview

Ashness House is a 26-bed inpatient service for males with severe and enduring mental health illness, co-morbid physical health problems and complex needs. The post is for a Physician Assistant working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide care to adult men in a locked psychiatric hospital providing psychiatric rehabilitation services. The team, alongside the associated local GP, cares for residents’ physical health and mental health needs, with many residents having chronic physical health conditions coexisting with psychiatric conditions. Supervision is provided by the consultant psychiatrist.

Location: Jersey Avenue, Stanmore, Middlesex. Salary: £38,000 per year. Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full-time.


Responsibilities

* Provide supervised high-quality clinical care to residents using established clinical guidelines, delivered in a timely manner.
* Carry out consultations with residents and consult with the consultant psychiatrist on diagnosis, treatment, and referral of residents.
* Collaborate with nursing staff, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and other MDT members to deliver coordinated resident care.
* Attend and contribute toward ward rounds, CPA meetings, and MDT reviews, presenting updates on residents’ physical and mental health progress and care coordination.
* Support the consultant psychiatrist in collating information for clinical decision-making; make referrals to secondary care and social services within locally agreed protocols under supervision.
* Carry out physical examinations, investigations, and clinical procedures within your competence; instruct and educate residents in preventative health care.
* Ensure complete and accurate documentation after each resident contact; maintain complete records of resident care and complete all required legal and administrative paperwork.
* Document all aspects of resident care in line with confidentiality policies and procedures; produce accurate records of resident consultations.
* Utilise clinical guidelines and promote evidence-based practice; contribute to quality targets and service delivery improvements.


Administration & Governance

* Contribute to audits, evaluation, and clinical standard setting; maintain governance systems and processes across the practice.
* Act as a point of contact between the ward, pharmacy, GP surgery, and external agencies on physical and mental health and care management issues.
* Review and action resident clinical discharge letters under supervision; ensure practice policies are implemented.
* Work within data governance and confidentiality policies; ensure compliance with NHS/NICE guidelines and evidence-based care.
* Identify learning from resident complaints, incidents, and near-misses; participate in shared learning across the practice and wider organisation.


Training, Development & Professional Standards

* Take responsibility for own development with evidence-based knowledge; maintain CPD and a Personal Development Plan (PDP).
* Remain up to date through courses and study days; comply with CPD requirements and complete re-certification exams (as required by regulatory bodies).
* Work under direct supervision of the consultant psychiatrist with regular opportunities for feedback and professional development.


Governance, Health & Safety, Confidentiality, Equality

* Deliver care in accordance with NHS guidance, NICE guidelines and evidence-based care; contribute to safeguarding and statutory requirements.
* Maintain confidentiality under the Data Protection Act and Caldicott guidance; be aware of the Freedom of Information Act.
* Promote Equality & Diversity; ensure services meet the needs of residents and their families without discrimination.


Requirements

* Essential: Degree at 2:1 or above and a Postgraduate Diploma/Masters in Physician Associate Studies from an accredited university.
* Essential: Current and valid certification or recertification by the Physician Associate National Examination.
* Essential: Registration with the General Medical Council as a Physician Associate.
* Desirable: Evidence of continuing professional development activities.


UK Registration

Applicants must have current UK professional registration.
