In REF2021 it has increased to 85%. This post is available on our teaching and scholarship career track. Here at the School of Health Sciences, we value the partnership we have with students and prioritise support and encouragement for all our students across their differing programmes. The School offers a welcoming context for those who are less experienced in teaching to develop their potential. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to teaching and learning across the School’s portfolio, but primarily within the dental hygiene and dental therapy programme.

The Project

The BSc (Hons) in Dental Therapy is commissioned by HEIW and commences with its first intake of students in September 2025. We are looking for a full-time (1.0 fte) lecturer/clinical supervisor to deliver teaching to the dental therapy and our existing dental hygiene students and support them in their clinical placements.


Purpose of the Job

To make a contribution to achieving the academic objectives of the School through the clinical supervision of undergraduate dental hygiene and dental therapy students and to make a contribution to course administration.

1. To teach at undergraduate level, including the clinical supervision of dental hygiene and dental therapy students.

2. To develop teaching materials or methodologies, for example course design or assessment and contribute to module co-ordination.

3. To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate students.

4. To undertake administrative duties as designated by the Head of School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching duties will include:

5. Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
6. Motivate students to proactively engage in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.
7. Work toward leading the development of new modules, and the re-design and improvement of existing modules.
8. To be involved in the assessment of students in line with the quality assurance requirements of the School.
9. Be personal tutor to a number of students, providing the highest quality, consistent, advice, guidance and support.
10. Contribute to the development of new initiatives and programmes within the School.
11. Maintain and develop Scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies.
12. Ensure adherence to organisational and professional body (i.e. GDC) requirements in all aspects of academic work, and in personal professional development.
13. To engage in the teaching of dental programmes and assessment of undergraduate dental hygiene and dental therapy students, within the clinical environment.
14. To monitor the activities and actions of undergraduate dental hygiene and dental therapy students in order to ensure development of clinical skills and knowledge, aligned with the learning outcomes of the courses.
15. To ensure clinical dental education standards are maintained by working to evidence-based practice and National and Locally agreed clinical guidelines and care pathways.
16. Where appropriate, to take day to day responsibility for the organisation and co-ordination of patient treatment within undergraduate dental programmes in line with practice/placement policies and procedures.
17. To undertake administration in relation to clinical supervision of students.

Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:


18. Participate in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).
19. Contribute to the School's management, and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA procedures (if module co-ordinator).
20. Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
21. To undertake any other duties relevant to the School’s activities and commensurate with the level of the post, as directed by the Programme Lead.
22. Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting under graduate student experience).

Other Duties and Responsibilities

23. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

25. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential :

27. Diploma/degree in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy / Dental Therapy/ Degree in Oral Sciences.

28. Registration with the GDC as a Dental Therapist.

Desirable :

29. Formal teaching qualification at Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) level.

30. Previous experience mentoring/supervising dental nurses/hygienists/therapists would be beneficial but not essential.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential :

31. Substantial experience of working as a dental therapist within a primary care setting.

Desirable :

32. Experience in clinical training of the dental team.

33. Teaching experience within Higher Education.

Skills/Abilities

Essential :

34. Excellent clinical skills.

35. Ability to demonstrate and undertake effective clinical supervision of students.

36. Ability to work within a team.

37. Excellent communication skills.

38. Demonstrable IT Skills as required (e.g. VLE techniques and other forms of learning technologies).

39. Active networker.

Desirable :

40. Experience in the clinical assessment of students.
