Role: Social Work Assistant
Location: Glenfield, Leicestershire City Council
Pay Rate: £15 per hour
Work pattern: Monday to Thursday 8.30-17.00, Friday 8.30-16.30 – there may be opportunities for an earlier or later start.
This role involves handling safeguarding concerns, assessing risks, and sharing information when reports of abuse or neglect are made. You will support social workers and collaborate with professionals from children’s social care, targeted family help, police, health, and other agencies to help vulnerable children.
We seek committed and collaborative individuals eager to make a difference. This is an exciting opportunity to develop skills in a fast-paced, modern environment focused on protecting children and supporting families.
Your responsibilities include screening, handling calls and emails related to Children’s Social Care, and urgent police referrals. You will be supervised by qualified social work staff monthly and participate in a social work POD for reflective and developmental meetings.
You should be adaptable, work well under pressure both independently and as part of a team, and meet tight deadlines. Excellent communication skills and a natural curiosity to ask questions sensitively are essential.
Key Duties:
* Providing telephone advice and support to families, directing them to self-help resources, and promoting their use.
* Following scripts and guidance to ensure appropriate advice, escalating cases as needed.
* Informing families about available services for self-referral or open access.
* Offering telephone support on basic behavior strategies.
* Taking messages and updates for Social Workers.
* Advising professionals on thresholds for services and referral pathways.
* Maintaining awareness of local, county, and national services for children and families, understanding service thresholds and eligibility criteria.
Experience in Children’s Services and Customer Services, along with strong ICT skills (preferably with Mosaic), is desirable.
