Hepatopancreaticobiliary & Emergency General Surgery Consultant

The post holder will be expected to provide specialist liver and pancreas surgery for the local community and for Wiltshire, Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.


Main duties of the job

Patient care revolves around a team‑based approach with individual consultants being responsible for their own patients’ care throughout their pathway. All cancer referrals are discussed by the multi‑disciplinary team. The new consultant will be expected to participate in all aspects of patient care including out‑patients, in‑patient ward care, emergency general surgical take and an out of hours commitment to the care of the in‑patients on a rotating basis.

The clinical duties in addition to major cancer resections will include management and treatment of complex benign pancreato‑biliary disease including complicated severe acute pancreatitis, laparoscopic staging of malignancy and gallbladder surgery. The successful candidate will also be expected to organise their workload and operate an appointment system in a manner that is consistent with good practice as laid out in the Trust’s Policy for Management of Waiting Lists and Times.

Person Specification


Qualifications & Training

* Fully registered with GMC.
* Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) (or equivalent, or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview).
* Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications.
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (or equivalent)
* Must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register for Surgery to start Consultant appointment.
* Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.


Experience

* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in general surgery.
* Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
* Two years of higher surgical training in a tertiary HPB or liver transplant unit.
* Experience of minimally invasive liver and pancreas resection.
* Independent experience in bile duct exploration and acute cholecystectomy.
* Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy.
* Evidence of practice development during recent clinical activity Post CCST fellowship training or consultant experience in HPB or liver transplant surgery.


Clinical Knowledge and Skills

* Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty.
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to cancer services.
* Broad range of IT skills.
* Ability to perform major resectional HPB surgery.
* Sub‑specialty interest encouraged.


Clinical Governance and Audit

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
* Positive approach to evidence based practice.
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation.


Research

* Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
* Evidence of involvement in research.
* Evidence of peer review research papers.
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.


Teaching and Training

* Experience of teaching medical students.
* Experience of supervising trainees.
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team.
* Formal teaching qualification.
* Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it.
* Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service.
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant.
* Ability to practice independently as a consultant.
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership.
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks.
* Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures.


Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries.
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi‑professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions.
* Ability to be a flexible team member.
