Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and resilient 14-16 Mentor / Youth Worker to join our Learner Engagement Team at Peterborough College. This role is key to ensuring that our youngest learners experience high-quality education, feel supported, and are able to overcome barriers to engagement and achievement.
The Youth Worker will hold a full‑time (37 hours per week) position, working all year round, and will work closely with curriculum teams, Student Services, schools, families, and external partners to provide pastoral support and targeted interventions for learners aged 14-16 accessing post‑16 education. Using a range of youth work and mentoring strategies, you will nurture positive behaviour, improve attendance and retention, and help learners develop the confidence and skills they need to reach their full potential.
This is a varied and impactful role, combining one‑to‑one mentoring, small group work, safeguarding responsibilities, enrichment activity delivery, and involvement in college‑wide engagement and recruitment events.
Key Responsibilities
* Work with young people in a mentoring, youth work, learning support or pastoral role
* Support learners aged 14‑16, particularly those at risk of disengagement
* Deliver group sessions and targeted interventions to re‑engage learners
* Identify individual needs and develop appropriate, learner‑centred responses
* Manage and positively challenge behaviour using clear boundaries and college policies
* Collaborate with curriculum teams, student services, schools, and external agencies
* Support attendance, retention, and positive learner outcomes through proactive intervention
* Handle safeguarding concerns appropriately and work within safeguarding frameworks
* Use IT systems (including Microsoft Office and student data systems) to maintain accurate records
* Provide advice, guidance, and advocacy for young people and their families
Qualifications & Requirements
* Experience of working with young people in a mentoring, youth work, learning support or pastoral role
* Experience supporting learners aged 14‑16, particularly those at risk of disengagement
* Experience delivering group sessions and targeted interventions
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and frameworks
* Familiarity with IT systems and student data systems
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
