Job Summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS).
The clinical biochemistry department operates a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The Clinical Chemistry section is equipped with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track. Specialist Chemistry provides a wide range of services across the Trust and other Hospital Trusts, using IDS iSYS, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with tests including immunosuppressants and steroids. The Immunology department offers a variety of tests aiding the diagnosis and management of immune disorders.
As a pre‑specialist biomedical scientist within the team, you will be trained and supported in analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions, and reporting of samples to achieve efficient and effective patient care. You will undertake responsibilities across any of the department sections throughout UHB.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy, friendly team and support our progressive department in providing high quality, timely and specialised services. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 2022 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training. This role offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in a fast‑paced department that is continually expanding, while developing your existing knowledge and skills.
Required qualifications and experience include a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent with HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist. The laboratory operates a 24/7 service, and after appropriate training you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required, including weekends. Shift timings are: Early (7:30‑3:30pm), Day (9:00‑5:00pm), Late (14:00‑22:00pm) and Night (21:45‑7:45am).

Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
* State registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC)
* Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines
Desirable:
* Working towards completion of post‑registration specialist competency portfolio
Experience
* Experience of working in clinical laboratories
* Experience of laboratory techniques and automation
Desirable:
* Experience of dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, the public or customer care
Additional Criteria
* Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations with and without the use of aids
* Team player
* Manual dexterity to undertake automated, manual and specialised techniques
* Good and accurate IT input and MS Office skills
* Effective written and oral communication skills
