National Highways, formerly Highways England, has named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the largest renewals programme and Environment and Wellbeing Designated Funds ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure design and construction services across the Strategic Road Network.
The Role
We are expanding our capacity on the Midlands SDF contract for National Highways. The role can be based anywhere in the Midlands, with multiple offices and remote work options. This Senior Environmental Consultant role offers the opportunity to collaborate with design teams and clients to lead environmental assessments across SDF projects in the Midlands. Responsibilities include providing input into and reviewing DMRB topics such as Biodiversity, Landscape, Cultural Heritage, Waste & Materials, Population and Human Health, and Climate, alongside managing environmental projects from scoping to full assessments.
Typical weekly responsibilities include:
* Line managing and mentoring junior team members, providing environmental input to SDF schemes, managing resources, budgets, and schedules, and overseeing technical reviews and staff development.
* Contributing to budgets and forecasting.
* Guiding best practices in environmental methods and liaising with designers.
* Staying updated with industry standards.
* Advising on environmental aspects with ecologists, conducting site visits, inspections, and surveys.
* Preparing and reviewing technical reports compliant with legislation and standards.
* Engaging with statutory bodies like the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Local Authorities.
Candidate profile:
* Degree in Environmental Science or similar, with 6+ years’ experience in environmental assessment reporting within a consultancy.
* Membership of a professional body or relevant qualifications.
* Experience working in multidisciplinary teams, infrastructure projects, and contractual management is desirable.
* Ability to manage budgets, resources, and workload effectively.
