Main duties of the job
Variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations, queries, home visits, repeat prescriptions, paperwork and correspondence.
In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.
Job responsibilities
The post-holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.
Clinical responsibilities:
* Make themselves available to undertake surgery consultations, telephone consultations, queries, and home visits as per the practice timetable.
* Check and sign repeat prescriptions and handle queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
* Make professional, autonomous decisions regarding presenting problems.
* Assess health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
* Develop care plans in consultation with patients in line with current practice disease management protocols; manage acute and chronic disease.
* Provide counselling and health education.
* Admit or discharge patients to and from the caseload and refer to other care providers as appropriate.
* Record clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
* Compile and issue computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions, avoiding hand‑written prescriptions when possible.
* Prescribe in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) when clinically appropriate.
Practice CQC regulated activities:
* Diagnostic and screening procedures for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
* Maternity and midwifery services.
* Treatment of disease, disorders or injury.
Other responsibilities within the organisation:
* Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety.
* Commitment to lifelong learning and audit to ensure evidence‑based best practice.
* Contribute to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation.
* Contribute to the development of computer‑based patient records and summarising of patient records and read‑coding patient data.

The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management of health and safety and infection control for themselves and others, as defined in the practice policies and published procedures. Duties include:
* Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines.
* Aware of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory and contractual requirements.
* Advising on safe specimen handling, labelling, storage and transport.
* Correct personal use and oversight of PPE.
* Managing all incidents of accidental exposure.
* Implementing infection control protocols across the practice.
* Observing current working practices, identifying weaknesses or training needs, and escalating issues as appropriate.
* Managing risks involved in work activities and preparing mitigation plans.
* Utilising training to update knowledge and skills, and training others where required.
* Monitoring practice facilities and equipment for infection control compliance.
* Ensuring proper use of hand‑cleansing facilities and supplies.
* Managing sharps, storage, disposal and maintaining a clean working environment.
* Demonstrating regard for safeguarding and promoting welfare of children.
* Reporting and correcting health and safety hazards promptly.
* Undertaking periodic infection control training at least twice annually.
