Offer description

North London NHS Foundation Trust seeks to appoint an enthusiastic full-time consultant psychiatrist to our Barnet Memory Service who will also be the clinical lead. This is a newly created post as part of service improvements, in order to create a separate Memory Service and Older Adult Community Mental Health Team.

This post offers 10 Programmed Activities per week - 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care and up to 2.5 PAs for supporting professional activity.


Main duties of the job

General Expectations of a Consultant Psychiatrist employed with North London NHS Foundation Trust include

* To work within the MDT promoting respect for all professional groups and focusing upon coherent and integrated teamwork.
* To be Section 12(2) approved and have approved clinician status and participate in the Trust-wide Section 12 daytime rota.
* To provide second opinions for consultant colleagues if requested.
* To keep up with administration and note-keeping on the electronic patient record system in a timely manner, including letters to GPs, Dialog+ and risk assessments.
* To assist with Serious Incident investigations and complaints if requested.
* To keep up to date with mandatory training.
* To attend and participate in Consultants' and Management meetings to keep informed of service issues and developments.
* Other management/clinical supporting activity (to be negotiated as required by the Trust.)

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to provide clinical leadership and RC responsibility within Barnet Memory Service: To provide senior medical input to the multi-disciplinary team, take part in regular meetings of the team, and provide senior psychiatric advice regarding diagnosis and the development of appropriate treatment plans. To ensure the timely assessment, treatment and follow up of elderly people with suspected dementia. To promote mental health and independence for elderly people. To take part in weekly MDT meeting To take part in the monthly business meeting, operational management meeting and senior management meeting. To provide clinical and professional leadership within the post and take part in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service within which it is embedded. As a senior clinician, to have an integral role in the performance of the team, further development of the service, and the development of the clinical pathways and priorities of the service, such as a separate Memory Service and Older Adult Community Mental Health Service, and a Diagnosis to End of Life model. To comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, safeguarding procedures To complete relevant paperwork, including maintaining the electronic record and participating in routine outcome monitoring of clinical work To teach and supervise medical staff and other professionals in all aspects of psychiatric care To participate in the trust wide on call rota (see section 20, below).


Qualifications

* Qualifications or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
* Open Dialogue Training
* Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
* Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
* Section 12 Approved or able to achieve within three months of appointment
* In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice


Transport

* Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative


Clinical skills, knowledge and experience

* Excellent knowledge in specialty
* Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
* Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
* Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
* Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
* Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service


Academic Skills and lifelong learning

* Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
* Ability to work in and lead team
* Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to deliver improvement
* Participated in research or service evaluation.
* Able to use and appraise clinical evidence
* Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
* Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
* Reflect on purpose of CPD undertaken
* Experienced in clinical research and/or service evaluation
* Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
* Has led clinical audits leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients


Information Technology Experience & Skills

* Basic computer skills, including ability to use e-mail and Internet
* Experience in data gathering and management


Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
