Job overview

This interesting and exciting role is focused on working closely with our outstanding and friendly clinical teams across the Division of Medicine to focus on learning from incidents and patient feedback.

You will be in close contact with our clinical teams every day and will be using your strong IT and data skills to share key information with our teams to allow learning actions to be quickly identified to improve our services for our patients and colleagues.

You will be part of our Clinical Governance team supported by our clinical governance and risk managers, Clinical Governance Lead and Divisional Nurse Director working as part of this effective, professional and friendly team.

Main duties of the job

You will support the clinical governance, quality and safety agenda across the Medicine Division working closely as a team. The main duties include:

1. Review of patient safety incidents to ensure that the appropriate processes are followed.
2. Have oversight and provide advice and guidance to teams on the management of risks.
3. To support the creation of action plans and monitoring of these to provide assurance .
4. Assist the Governance and Risk Managers with the establishment and implementation of systems and processes to support effective clinical governance.
5. Data collection and analysis to produce reports for a variety of meetings for different stakeholders.
6. Leading Patient Safety Investigations and coordination/writing of reports.
7. Oversee audit and policy administration, complaints management and standards implementation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

8. A good working awareness and knowledge of Clinical Governance and Risk Management.
9. Knowledge of NHS policy and structure.
10. Understanding of incident investigation and Patient Safety Incident Review Framework (PSIRF).
11. Excellent communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organisation and key stakeholders.
12. Excellent organisational skills.
13. Ability to engage individuals in proactive approaches to problem solving.
14. Ability to manage and coordinate responses to incident investigation.
15. Ability to work to tight deadlines under pressure and work at pace.
16. Intermediate IT skills – experience of working with excel spreadsheets, databases and information systems
17. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed information and to use data management systems for the effective recording of data.
18. Ability to analyse data and produce effective and accurate data reports.
19. Ability to produce written reports to a standard that is acceptable to a range of audiences (internal and external).
20. Ability to deliver training to a variety of stakeholders as appropriate to the role.
21. Ability to deal with difficult and sensitive situations with tact, diplomacy and professionalism.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

28. GCSE’s A-C in English, Maths
29. Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.

Desirable criteria

30. Educated to degree level or equivalent training/qualification relevant to role
31. Experience supporting governance, patient safety, or risk-management processes

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

32. Understanding of NHS policies, frameworks, and organisational structure relevant to governance and patient safety.
33. Understanding of the Patient Safety Investigation Framework (PSIRF)
34. Experience in organising and coordinating meetings, including accurate minute-taking and action tracking.
35. Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritise tasks, and meet tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Desirable criteria

37. Demonstrates knowledge and experience in planning, coordinating, and completing clinical audits to support compliance and quality improvement
38. Demonstrates strong working knowledge and practical experience in clinical governance principles and risk management
39. Working knowledge of undertaking incident investigations, including the application of learning methodologies.
40. Previous experience working within an NHS setting, with an understanding of governance structures and patient safety processes.
41. Experience in supporting the delivery of training.
42. Experience in contributing to learning and improvement actions.
43. Experience in introducing and embedding new systems or processes to improve governance and risk management efficiency.
44. Experience of using incident/risk management software (i.e. Datix/Ulysses)
