As an Application Support Engineer at Sensus, you will play a key role in supporting and maintaining bespoke and open‑source applications that enable our smart metering and utility technology solutions. Working within a dedicated team of engineers and support staff, you will investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software issues, replicate and analyse problems, and support software upgrades and deployments. You will take a proactive approach to identifying potential issues before they escalat and contribute to ongoing improvements across our platforms.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide 2nd/3rd line support for both open‑source and bespoke software stacks across Linux, Windows and Android.
* Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software issues, coordinating with development teams as needed.
* Support software upgrades, including patch testing and deployment for in‑house and customer systems.
* Proactively monitor application health and performance to maintain system stability.
* Collaborate with support teams to ensure effective issue resolution and knowledge sharing.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and maintain technical documentation/knowledge‑base articles, where necessary.
Qualifications & Skills
* Proven experience in application support, systems administration, or a related technical support/DevOps role.
* Strong Linux fundamentals, particularly Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
* Solid troubleshooting and problem‑solving abilities and high attention to detail.
* Hands‑on experience with MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or MariaDB (including writing and optimising queries)
* Good understanding of core networking protocols (DNS, FTP, HTTP, SSH etc.)
* Familiarity with digital certificates, PKI fundamentals and security principles.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* A collaborative team member who adapts quickly, embraces new challenges, and is eager to learn and expand technical skills.
Preferred
* Experience with Java application stacks.
* Familiarity with version control systems such as Git or Subversion.
* Knowledge of AWS and Terraform.
* Experience with scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
* Hands‑on experience with VMware, Ansible, Docker, or Kubernetes.
* Understanding of the OSI model and broader networking standards.
* Knowledge of ITIL or service‑management best practices.
* Full clean UK driving licence.
