ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

This role reports to Research and Partners Manager, Applied Genomics Centre

SUMMARY

The Lead Bioinformatician will play a significant leadership role in research projects within the Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) by conceptualizing, designing and building bioinformatic pipelines and protocols for applied research projects. They will also be responsible for organizing and maintaining large data sets and bioinformatic tools for the AGC. This individual will work closely with industry partners under the supervision and direction of the AGC Director and senior leadership. They are also responsible for mentoring research staff and student researchers working in the AGC laboratories.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Provide strategic bioinformatics support and guidance to AGC's Director, Faculty, and AGC senior leadership.
* Lead the bioinformatics team, overseeing task distribution, progress tracking, and mentoring staff to ensure high-quality and timely delivery of project goals.
* Meet with industry partners to design and plan bioinformatics components of research projects, ensuring alignment with scientific objectives and timelines.
* Oversee and perform complex bioinformatics analyses, including quality control, troubleshooting, and the development of analytical workflows for high-throughput genomic and transcriptomic data.
* Coordinate the retrieval and processing of sequencing data from AGC platforms and public databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
* Evaluate, implement, and customize open-source bioinformatics tools, as well as design and maintain custom scripts and pipelines for genomics data analysis.
* Provide technical leadership in the preparation of reports, manuscripts, and presentations, working collaboratively and under the guidance of AGC's senior leadership.
* Mentor and train junior bioinformaticians and undergraduate student researchers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and skill development.
* Ensure the organization, maintenance, and documentation of high-throughput data, bioinformatics scripts, and computational tools to support reproducibility and scalability.
* Execute laboratory experiments required for research projects, when necessary.
* Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Biology, Genetics, or related discipline. Master's or PhD degree is preferred.
* Minimum two years of hands-on experience in NGS data analysis, including demonstrated leadership and project management experience in academic or industry settings.
* Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and Unix/Linux systems, with experience developing and optimizing custom analysis pipelines for high-throughput datasets.
* Proficiency working with high performance computing clusters.
* Proficiency working with Ensemble, NCBI and UCSC genome browsers, and other genomic databases.
* Experience with metagenomics data analysis, whole genome sequencing analysis, and/or GWAS.
* Proficiency in utilizing bioinformatics tools and pipelines such as SAMtools, BAMtools, VCFtools, Bowtie, QIIME, Mothur, DADA2.
* Experience with long-read Nanopore data analysis.
* Hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques such as qPCR, Sanger Sequencing, NGS, or Illumina SNP arrays.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Excellent planning and organization skills.
SALARY INFORMATION

Anticipated hourly pay rate: $34 - $40 #J-18808-Ljbffr
