In-Patient Phlebotomy Technician

Vacancies have arisen for part-time Phlebotomists in the Pathology Department at Hull University Teaching NHS Hospitals.

Obtains routine samples of venous blood from hospital in-patients and outpatients for the purpose of pathology testing. Assists the Phlebotomy Manager and Phlebotomy Supervisors in the provision of an effective and responsive service to our users within available resources. The phlebotomy team provide a 7 days a week service throughout the year. The post holder should be prepared to work weekends, which attract unsocial hour payments as specified under the Terms and Conditions of Agenda for Change. The post holder may be based at Hull Royal Infirmary or Castle Hill Hospital and will be required to provide cover on both sites to meet service needs.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will join a busy Phlebotomy team in providing essential venepuncture services to wards and departments at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.

Previous experience of blood taking from veins of the arm or finger prick and/or other clinical experience is desirable but not essential, as successful applicants will have full venepuncture training provided.

The post is suited to any applicant already from a healthcare background or those wishing to take their first steps into a career in healthcare/healthcare sciences.

A good standard of secondary education and experience in dealing with patients, customers or clients in a healthcare environment is required. A pleasant and compassionate nature, good communication skills and the ability to work flexibly within a team are essential. Core hours of duty are over two shifts: 07:30 till 11:45, Saturday and Sundays at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. The post holder will undertake regular training and competency assessment, to ensure the highest standard of care for our patients is offered.

Qualifications


Experience

* Experience of dealing with patients or in care settings
* Phlebotomist or Blood Sciences experience


Skills and Knowledge

* Able to work without close supervision yet fit into a team when required
* Able to follow a full training programme to maintain required level of competency
* Able to work to specified procedures
* Able to work under pressure


Other Requirements

* Flexible nature able to cope with changing demands of the service. Must be able to communicate with patients and other professionals at all levels
* Responsible and mature attitude. Articulate and confident with a pleasant manner
* Suitable level of dexterity required for the role
* Able to wear personal protective equipment
* An interest in the field of patient care
