This is a unique opportunity to work across two acute hospital sites-Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital-delivering high-quality care to critically ill patients in a region known for its clinical excellence and stunning natural beauty.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic consultant group committed to innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. With the opening of a new, purpose-built 22-bed Critical Care Unit at Musgrove Park Hospital, this role offers the chance to shape the future of intensive care in Somerset. The Trust is proud of its outstanding ICNARC outcomes and its CQC rating for care, reflecting the dedication of our multidisciplinary teams.

You'll be supported by experienced Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, junior doctors, and a robust governance structure. The job plan is flexible and can be tailored to your interests, whether that includes teaching, research, or contributing to the regional critical care transfer service, Retrieve. We also welcome applicants with dual accreditation or those seeking to maintain a second specialty.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

As a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality care to critically ill patients across Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital. Your clinical expertise will be central to managing complex cases in the Intensive Care Unit, where you'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate treatment.

Your responsibilities will include leading ward rounds, making key decisions in patient management, and providing consultant-level input into admissions, discharges, and ongoing care. You'll be actively involved in supervising junior medical staff and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, fostering a culture of learning and excellence. Teaching and mentoring will be a valued part of your role, with opportunities to contribute to training programs and educational initiatives within the Trust.

You'll also participate in clinical governance activities, including audits, service development, and quality improvement projects. If you have an interest in research or regional collaboration, there are opportunities to engage with the South West critical care transfer service, Retrieve, and contribute to broader system-wide initiatives.

Flexibility is a key feature of this role. The job plan can be tailored to accommodate your professional interests.
