Project Overview
Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) supports the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy. Bechtel is collaborating with AWE as an integrated team to deliver the preliminary design for the facilities within the Future Materials Campus, a conceptual‑design phase project involving a multi‑billion‑pound investment in nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities.
Job Summary
This position is for an Environmental and Sustainability Specialist on a multi‑year contract. The role is part‑time telework with a minimum of three days in‑person per week at the assigned office or project site. The Specialist will support the Engineering Delivery Manager as the environmental representative, assisting with design efforts, reports, studies, reviews, and ensuring compliance with environmental and sustainability requirements.
Major Responsibilities
* Execute environmental and sustainability deliverables according to established requirements, design criteria, approved procedures, and applicable codes and standards.
* Facilitate execution of the environmental component of an ESH Program, including technical and administrative aspects.
* Develop studies into the environmental impacts and sustainability of the proposed design and construction processes.
* Prepare, coordinate, and review designs, studies, reports, and proposals.
* Initiate coordination of building design development with other engineering disciplines, managing workload and meeting schedule due dates.
* Participate in safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP) and review compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
* Review deliverables from other disciplines and suppliers to ensure design intent is adequately incorporated.
* Interpret and integrate environmental requirements in design, planning, risk assessment, and program execution.
* Support informal studies and technical briefings with customers, suppliers, and other departments.
Education and Experience Requirements
* A recognised bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, field biology, natural resources, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
* Ideally 8+ years of relevant experience.
* Chartership with the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) or an equivalent professional qualification.
Required Knowledge and Skills
* Knowledge of environmental management, monitoring programmes, principles, and methodologies.
* Knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting processes, and responsibilities of applicable agencies.
* Familiarity with ISO 14001 principles, environmental monitoring, and reporting procedures.
* Ability to analyse and report environmental monitoring data, interpret results, and prepare compliance documents or corrective action plans.
* Attention to detail for identifying and documenting potential environmental impacts.
* Research and comprehension of organisational and regulatory requirements.
* Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
* Strong organisational skills.
* Relevant industrial experience; general nuclear experience is a plus.
* Ability to obtain a SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.
Other
* The role is based primarily at Aldermaston UK, with possible travel to Bechtel’s London office; flexibility includes three days per week at the project site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office.
* The position is open to United Kingdom nationals only.
